I am researching cookers, will need to replace my lovely old gas range when my new kitchen goes in in January. I want a total new look and if I don`t have another range it would have to be a free standing gas cooker or under counter electric oven. To get a large oven it would be a single one have seen a 74 litre capacity, AEG which is lovely. They all seem to be fan, but I have read many reviews saying its difficult to get good results baking cakes etc, ok for meat/casseroles. I have never cooked with electric or fan so would really appreciate your expert views! Thank you.

I thought fan ovens were meant to be more even (because if the fan) than other types because the fan distributed the heat. Confused

I have one and other than occasionally lowering the heat by 10-20 degrees for a recipe I don't notice any problems. Cakes are baked evenly. :)

I think you need to use different settings if your oven has one & pay attention to the instructions. My Neff oven's instructions say to use specific shelf settings if using the fan for baking if using the fan or to use the top & bottom heat setting.

I always had gas cookers until the past year or so when I moved in to an apartment with a fan assisted electric oven (I think it's a Smeg one). Never liked the idea of an electric oven but I have to say its brilliant. I bake a lot and you just have to adjust the temperature to a lower heat and bake for less time. It's one of those things you get used to, but it does cook very well.

I have a fan oven now - I have never had such good results with baking before. Now everything works really well! I do use a lower temperature.

I have a 2 oven gas range-cooker and one is fan assisted. It seems to get hotter than the other one, but is a bit more even heat, so good for baking stuff that all needs the same temp (like trays of biscuits) - I just put it a gas mark lower.

SparklyFucker · 22/11/2013 10:54

They run hotter in general, but with fewer specific hot spots. As a rule if the instructions for bake temperatures are not fan oven specific, I reduce the temp by 20c and leave the time the same. Never had poor results unless I've forgotten to adjust a temperature.

They take getting used to as you haves to turn them down as they run hotter, but I do lots of baking and they are fantastic imeSmile

Have

owlface · 22/11/2013 14:49

I hate mine, I get wonky cakes and trays of biscuits browner on one side. I've even marked the dial with gas mark numbers as temperatures mean nothing to me in baking!

valiumredhead · 22/11/2013 15:02

Has your cooker been levelled properly if it's free standing?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 22/11/2013 15:04

I have a fan oven and I bake a fair bit. I never even remember to turn the temp down because it's a fan, I just cook at whatever temp is given and everything comes out fine, not wonky and not uneven.

Bigtillymint may I ask which range you have and what size ovens, are you pleased with it? My Rangemaster is 16 yrs old and is much better quality than the new ones. The thermostats now need replacing, the seals do and its looking tatty, its done me proud but its got to go! So back to electric ovens which makes would you recommend?
