I'm not sure if it was here or elsewhere I read that I could spray something onto shower glass to stop the dreaded limescale build up getting so bad. Now that I've managed to clean it off, would love to know how to prevent it staying on there in future. Thank you wise housekeepers.

I use a hand held window wiper to wipe the water off straight after having a shower. I find that very effective.

Missus2ndwife · 20/11/2013 14:46

It doesnt work because I bought the stuff years ago and tried it. Limescale build up is inevitable. All I can suggest is regular cleans.

Piffpaffpoff · 20/11/2013 14:48

Cillit Bang foam v good for this.

VenusDeWillendorf · 20/11/2013 14:49

How did you clean it off! Our water here is much harder than our last house. Shower looks almost opaque! Is is elbow grease, or is there a dissolver for a nighttime spray-on?!

bigTillyMint · 20/11/2013 14:51

White vinegar is good for limescale. Whatever you use, you have to keep on top of it - a really good clean once a week keeps it at bay in our house!

NigelMolesworth · 20/11/2013 14:52

I use the Tesco daily shower spray. It keeps it down enough that cleaning the screen every week is not a massive trial. However, the limescale will still build up over time so unfortunately I've found it is not a substitute for elbow grease.

Piffpaffpoff · 20/11/2013 14:53

Really, the Cillit Bang is miraculous, couldn't see through my door and them one or two shots of that and it's sparkly. I think I used a soft brush (might have been an old dish washing brush?) the first time to scrub it off but now I just use a sponge .

Matildathecat · 20/11/2013 17:35

Arghhh, cillit bang alert! Don't use anywhere near a natural stone tiled floor. (Sobs), expensive repairs and not really the same as before.

Daily shower shine and weekly scrub. All nice and clean.

helzapoppin2 · 20/11/2013 18:26

I removed some yesterday just by scrubbing hard with a dry hand towel. Don't know how to stop it building up again, though!

kelda · 21/11/2013 10:46

Really, get a hand held wiper. It takes a bit of effort but if you get all the water droplets off the shower glass straight after shwoering, then they are not there long enough to allow limescale to build up.

valiumredhead · 21/11/2013 13:42

You need the new dettol shower and sink spray and use a wiper after every shower.

MaggieW · 21/11/2013 14:08

Thanks for that. I used Viakal to get it off - spray on, scourer it off a couple of times and it did the trick.

Clean it off, then wipe over with wd40 to help prevent more. Do not spray your shower tray with wd40, if you value your elbows and bum bones!

No advice on how to remove it, I go for prevention rather than cure. I spray with dilute vinegar and hoover off with a Karcher. I think it's the drying rather than the vinegar that does the trick.

firemansamsmam · 21/11/2013 20:08

Viakal is amazing stuff. Revolutionised my bathroom.

valiumredhead · 21/11/2013 20:13

Proceed with caution if you use cilit bang, it stained my grouting!

Optimist1 · 21/11/2013 20:30

I agree Viakal will get it off initially. I tried Method shower spray and was sorely disappointed (and considerably poorer). Then changed to Essential Waitrose shower spray and am very happy with its performance. I do live in a hard water area.

(Am a bit excited to learn that Dettol have a product, though - am a big Dettol fan.)

MaggieW · 22/11/2013 16:47

Thanks all - BrownSS, you've hit the nail on the head. It was WD40 I'd been told/heard about ages ago but couldn't remember it recently. Will give it a whirl.

Thanks again.

I used the waitrose spray, the dettol stuff is TONS better.

MollyBerry · 22/11/2013 16:59

If your'e not into chemicals then lemon juice works too

Cuddleczar · 23/11/2013 09:23

Once it is nice and clean, dry it and then spray with a smidgeon of furniture polish, eg Pledge and buff with a dry cloth. Keeps it clear longer and yes I agree get into the habit of using a window wiper to get the water off after showering. But be careful not to spray Pledge on the floor as it makes it very slippery (perhaps put newspaper under the door when you spray).
