Whats lurking at the bottom of your laundry basket?

BettySpaghetti · 12/07/2006 09:34

My laundry basket is never empty because there are two of my tops at the bottom with very specific handwash instructions which make them a PITA to wash. They have delicate beading etc on and are very much wedding/party type tops so rarely worn. I hate to think how long they've been in there.

Anyone else have this or am I the only lazy good for nothing ?

(OK, so maybe Good Housekeeping might not be the right heading but we don't have a Poor and Lazy Housekeeping section )

I have this BS!!!! - my kids cardigans from Monsoon with glass type beading. Think kids have forgotten we have them they've been their so long!!

sparkler1 · 12/07/2006 09:36

I have no idea - can't see bottom of mine. Washing machine broken.

sparkler1 · 12/07/2006 09:36

There's usually a couple of things sitting around for a while that need hand washing. I have to be in the right mood.

tenalady · 12/07/2006 09:37

Same here Betty, been there since February, how lazy is that?

singersgirl · 12/07/2006 09:39

I've got DS1's Indian pyjama kurta type thingy in there, because it's handwash only, and it hasn't been washed since the dressing up day for which he wore it.

nutcracker · 12/07/2006 09:40

Two tops that ned handwashing. They will stay there until I need them and then my mum will hand wash them for me

BettySpaghetti · 12/07/2006 09:41

Can your mum do mine as well please ?

usually an awful Bratz t-shirt (given to dd by a friend)
easy enough to wash but the longer it stays there the less likely she is ever to wear it (has only worn it once to show the friend in question )

wordgirl · 12/07/2006 09:42

A purple silk handwash only blouse that dh bought me. It's been there for about three years
I suppose I must have worn it once but I'm obviously not in too much of a hurry to wear it again!

NomDePlume · 12/07/2006 09:42

DS1's Le Coq Sportif hoody. It is red and white and runs like a b@$tard even if you wash it on the coolest temp and on its own. I have to wash it with a colour catcher thing to stop the red sleeves turning the body and the hood pink.

BettySpaghetti · 12/07/2006 09:44

Wordgirl -thank goodness you've admitted to something being in there for years rather than weeks/months because since my original post I've been trying to remember how long those tops have been there and it runs into years .

OP posts:
wordgirl · 12/07/2006 09:46

LOL BettySpaghetti - and when I say three years I mean at least three years!

neena28 · 12/07/2006 09:47

I wash all my dd's monsoon beaded cardi's etc on the handwash cycle in the machine, same for everything that says handwash, posh undie's/designer clothes, never had a problem yet!

Only thing at the bottom of mine is dry cleaning trousers and a top that even I daren't risk in the machine. But I hate the idea of drycleaning and the bill so they will be there a little while longer plus they are both winter things.

Feel smug now as it is sooo unusual to actually be able to see the bottom. Normally as soon as I emtpy it I think to my self " now I've got through it all I'll take all the cushion covers off!" Or something equally thick!

JackieNo · 12/07/2006 09:52

Oh yes - I had a hand wash top in my washing basket for well over a year. Now that I've finally washed it, it's now in the pile to go to the charity shop. Also an underwired bra (lonly been in there a week) that I need to wash somehow - might bung it in with some delicates (DD's ballet stuff). And there are some lonely single socks that are waiting to be reunited with their partners before they get washed.

MrsBadger · 12/07/2006 09:53

lol at 'Poor and Lazy Housekeeping'!

normally I have a Delicate Party Top or similar in there, but for the last party I wore a silk top that really is dryclean only. It's in a carrier bag still waiiting to go to the dry cleaners', but it's not in the laundry basket so it doesn't count!

we have a canvas laundry bin thing so when I get to the bottom (rare, I admit) I wash the bin itself.

I remmeber when we were packing to move out of the London flat I found a couple of things that had been in the laundry basket for at least a year...

MrsBadger · 12/07/2006 09:55

my lonely socks get washed first and hang about lonely once clean - I suff them in the relevant sock drawer and hope their mate comes out of the wash to find them.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 12/07/2006 09:56

A top that runs in the wash and is waiting for a handwash.

NomDePlume · 12/07/2006 09:59

Same here, MrsB (the socks), hate the thought of smelly socks hanging around until their partners show up (maybe never, in my house). I have a little wash bin with all the odd socks in there and every now and again (when I remember) I go through it and pair up any that match.

Gingeme · 12/07/2006 10:05

I have sand in the bottom of my washing basket! My eldest ds plays football on astro turf twice a week and comes home covered in sand. Not sure what sand and astro turf have to do with each other but thats it. Oh and a single Bob The Builder sock.

cadbury · 12/07/2006 10:15

an indie like natural something or other fabric top that is blue and white, or at least it was. It runs big time and I need to handwash it but it's so heavy when wet that it stays there - silly dh for buying it! It's much too young for him anyway!

EvesMama · 12/07/2006 10:19

my cheapo red and white t-shirt cos i darent wash it with anything incase it runs!

octavia · 12/07/2006 10:20

for some reason and god knows why a cheap plastic paddling pool !!!

themoon66 · 12/07/2006 10:41

A bright red Gucci shirt that teenage DD brought home from a charity shop. I have nothing else red in the house to wash it with and i bet it runs like a bugger, which is why its original owner took it to the charity shop in the first place.

PinkTulips · 12/07/2006 10:48

used to have a pile of things that needed mending in the bottom but got so sick of them lurking at me i chucked em after about 2 years
only thing hanging around waiting to be handwashed is dd's christening dress but thats not in the basket so it doesn't count (does it?)

SSSandy · 12/07/2006 10:50

A red sweatshirt which loses colour in the wash and can only be washed by itself

One of two things that need to be handwashed
