DVD cases - get rid?

I'm having a purge of "stuff" and I'm like a woman possessed.

I've got a load of DVDs that I want to keep but want to store them out of the way.

The boxes take up so much space!

Am I insane to be considering chucking all the boxes and inserts and storing the DVDs themselves in a useful wallet?

Why would I regret this? It seems too obvious thing to do, but no-one seems to do it.

Any advice, oh wise MNers?

Lots of people on MN recommend this. I have been considering it, but it would have to be something that would be easy to flick through the DVDs. At the moment all of mine are stored in drawers, spine upwards. So when the drawer is opened it's easy to read all the spines and find what I want. They would take up a small fraction of the current space if they weren't in boxes though.

Something like this would be good for flicking through. This is more attractive but I think I would have to lift each DVD upwards to find the one I want, it doesn't look very flickable.

I've got rid of so much stuff this weekend that I've scared myself witless but I'm on an absolute adrenalin rush of crap-dumping.

Not pregnant or nesting - experiencing early menopause symptoms which might be driving me on!

Afraid I might dump the DCs by mistake. They are both bigger than me so ought to be able to stop me!

What is the actual point of DVD boxes anyway?

I've been thinking I might be entering menopause soon-ish. I will look forward to a lovely minimalist house once it happens. Grin

Really, the only reason that I can think of for keeping the boxes is for when I donate stuff to charity/church sales. But, on the whole, our DVDs get scratched and thrown away more than they get donated. If you sometimes lend DVDs to friends then you might need to keep a few boxes for that, otherwise a proper storage system will protect them just as well as a box would.

I've done this with DS's DVDs of which there are about 200! Never looked back. They're well protected in the wallet they're in, and it's easy for him to look through and pick what he wants to watch. I checked all the cases and just kept the inserts / paper sleeve thingys. Mountains of space saved. :)

We have done this, it works just fine for us.

We did this, and with CDs too. I put the cases on freecycle, they were very popular.

cuppachai · 17/11/2013 19:21

chucked not checked. :/

Oh you wonderful minimalist people!

What else can I get rid of?

What if you want to check how long a film is? (sorry for stupid question emoticon)

diddlediddledumpling · 18/11/2013 19:46

I'm pretty sure that's never happened since we did it! Now, i'd quickly google it on my phone.
