How do you keep the shower drain clear?

I have just unblocked our shower drain and it is the most disgusting job ever. (Three DDs with long hair.) I do it about every two to three weeks and there is always a matted smelly thing that looks like an old sock and smells worse! Any recommendations for how to prevent it? I can't imagine that there are people out there who really do remove the hair after each shower! (Are there? Confused)

Oxo good grips do one. www.amazon.co.uk/OXO-Good-Grips-Shower-Protector/dp/B003M8GMUY

I bought it because I'm under pain of death not to block the shower up.

If you add a cheapy book in warehouse deals it wil be 40-60p extra but free postage.

I remoive the hair after each shower, but I'm not a teenager and have to maintain my own house!

give it a go.

I remove hair after each shower. I have to because I lose so much. It's the only way!

I do the drains (baths/showers) manually every week. I also chuck the scary Mr Muscle chemical warfare down there once a month

I wash my hair at the gymBlushBlushBlush

(Seriously, when I started going to the gym 3 days a week the hair in plughole issues decreased rapidly. But when I do shower at home the only way to deal with it is clear it out weekly cause I'm a bit lazy daily.

And even then occasional use of industrial strength unblocker is needed. My hair has special powers.

Apparently pouring Veet down there has a fantastic effect, according to other MN threads. Haven't needed to do it myself, everyone is trained to (a) comb hair through before shower, to remove loose ones, and (b) clean shower INCLUDING THE PLUG AREA afterwards.

Lesson didn't really sink in until after I threw a hissy fit and made them clean it themselves when it got blocked up with hair though.

I always comb through the conditioner & any loose hairs that come off in my hand I roll into a ball & put in the bin. I have been suffering hair loss for 10 years so my hair sheds a lot.
You can get metal drain covers that cover the plug hole to stop hair going down.

I just bought 4 tubes of Nair in the Euro shop this morning for this exact purpose (€1.50 each, about 3 applications each, one a week for 3 months)

shower drains have for some years been made with a removable trap so you can clean out hair, toenails and earrings from above. Unlike basin and sink taps there is usually no access to the underside.

If you can't see how, you might have to search the plumbing shelves to find one that looks like yours, and look on the manufacturer's website for how do do it; or ask a friendly plumber. If your drain isn't like that, bear it in mind for next time.

Non-hair blockages can be shifted with a sink plunger or pump, possibly also some washing soda crystals to attack the soap sludge.

gross but eyebrow tweezers work to pull hair out, vinegar and bicarb is an ok drain unblocker too - I have usually found it as good as mr muscle

Jellyrollgumdrop · 18/11/2013 11:46

Just take out hair as you go, unblock scrum with soda crystals & boiling water

Rattitude · 18/11/2013 13:16

I saw some shower drain protectors similar to the one that Fluffy linked at a Family Bargains store. I think they were £1 and the packs also included a couple of sink strainers.

I also roll any loose hair into a ball which I throw in a corner of a shower and bin post-shower.

My shower drain is not that easy to access but I have only had to remove a big bunch of hair once in 3 years of having it. Thankfully, I had poured a lot of soda crystals and boiling water beforehand so even though it was gross, it did not stink.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2013 13:20

Similar to fluffy's thing, a dossil.

bellablot · 18/11/2013 13:53

You need to clear it more often than your doing. No need to buy anything specific, take the cover off, clean between and get your hands on the drain, easy.
