Cleaning Mud out of Rugby Kit

Olivebranch · 07/11/2013 13:05

My DS has brought home his rugby shirt completely covered in mud back and front. I put it into the wash straight away on a 50 wash but it made no difference. I then washed it at 90 - still no difference. I can't bleach it as it is pale blue and the material consists of 50% cotton/ 50% polyester.

Has anyone got any brilliant ideas as I'm not buying a new top to have the same thing happen next week!

Thanks

Try an overnight soak with a scoop or two of vanish?

homeaway · 07/11/2013 14:03

Soak with napisan and washing powder though i fear the stain will be set by now.

Bit late for you to try, but may help someone else:

I soak my DS's muddy rugby kit in Ariel's stain remover (water as hot as you can make it/clothes can stand). Leave it for as long as you can - 24 hours? Rinse out and wash in the machine. Similar to the Vanish solution I think.

It will just get dirty again!Grin

I rinse out my DS kit several times by hand to get rid of the worst. I can't bear the thought of all that mud clogging up my washing machine. Once in the machine, I wash on 40 with Persil non bio and a scoop of Vanish stain remover.

Olivebranch · 07/11/2013 22:21

I've tried the vanish spray & powder before but I'm not sure whether the material on his top is resistant or whether vanish just isn't that good. Having said that this time is the worst it has ever been, I think he must have been rolling around in the mud! I will try all your solutions especially the Ariel stain remover with an Ariel bio liquid.

Here goes fingers crossed .. thanks to you all it's much appreciated Smile

I've read advice to let the mud dry until you can scrape the bulk of it off (i.e. bone dry). Then do all the Vanish stuff. However I can't stand the muddy kit hanging around while I wait for it to dry...

SummerRain · 08/11/2013 00:04

The pitch ds1 plays on is obviously fertilized with manure/slurry... The stench is appalling in the car on the way home!

I find biological detergent at 40 gets it all off though, never had a problem with lingering stains. It has to be biological though, non bio just doesn't work on mud.

abittoofat · 10/11/2013 00:15

I use fairy liquid (or any other brand!) on the stain, then leave it a bit, and stick it in the wash.
Works lovely on cricket whites too.

AnguaResurgam · 10/11/2013 00:20

That link is really good.

I'd say you need to scrape/bright as much off as possible, soak in a bio such as Bold, then wash.

AnguaResurgam · 10/11/2013 00:21

'bright' - meant 'brush' (if dried).

HeyJudith · 10/11/2013 00:22

Rinse the worst of the mud off, then soak in a bucket of HOTTEST tap water with Ariel bio, for a couple of hours. Hand scrub. Then put in with rest of normal wash at 60.

Washing at 40 etc does not seem to activate the bio detergents as well as hot water does.

Ariel is very good for stain removal but it definitely works best in conjunction with very hot water.

abittoofat · 10/11/2013 12:27

Oh, yes - wash on hot. I use 50 for sports kit.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 10/11/2013 12:31

I'm very grateful that my boys kit is navy
Tbh I wouldn't worry too much. I would leave it as what I call dirty clean.
