What is the average annual cost of running gas central heating, say for 3 bed house?

I'm currently in a 2 bed house using Oil for central heating. The cost for Oil this year was £575 (which will last over 15 months) obviously using a bit of leccy with it. I'm planning on selling the house, relocating elsewhere, likely moving to a gas centrally heated house & I'm getting concerned about the price differential between the two heating systems. House is about 15 years old. Leccy approx. £330 a year all appliances/lighting/cooking.
Thanks.

I pay around £80 per month for gas to heat my 3 bed, 3 story house. Boiler is 5 years old but house is old and not very well insulated.

oil costs slightly more for the same amount of heat than mains gas, although the efficiency of the boiler will make a big difference.

the insulation, position, orientation and construction of the house also matter greatly. So choose the right kind of house and you should find things the same or cheaper. Of course with gas you can't buy when cheaper as you can with oil.

consider; the insulation of walls, double glazing, loft insulation, position (windy hilltop?), sun, number of exposed walls. Along with everything else to consider when buying a house!

modern boiler and cylinder. In summer, half a cubic metre of gas a day varying with number of baths.

In winter, 2.5 to 4 metres a day usually, 6 metres if bitterly cold.

A cubic metre of gas is about 11kwh and costs me about 3.6p per kWh this year, i.e. 40p per cu metre.

So, summer 0.5 x 40p = 20p/day

in winter between 2.5 x 40p = £1/day and 6 x 40p = £2.40/day

plus 22p per day standing charge.

The October gas bill was £20
The September gas bill was £11
Last December's gas bill was £90

Including last winter, which was cold and long, 1350 cu metres in the last 12 months. The gas supplier estimates about £680 if I use the same in the next 12 months at current prices.

The previous year, which was milder, was 1160 cu metres

Don't be impressed by what people tell you is their monthly direct debit, because this is based on estimates and forecasts, and often includes previous underpayments and overpayments, so it is seldom the same as actual usage cost.

correction

no, I was wrong. This year, Jan Feb and Mar all averaged over 7 metres a day, so the coldest days must have been more than that. I have never seen such high usage since changing the boiler.

(Back from work!) Thanks everyone - this is really helpful and a bit of relief really. My imagination was running overtime with news of price increases & current hardships some people are experiencing. I'll certainly take on board the heating considerations when considering a property. Thanks again.
