How do you store vegetables?

We have the world's greediest dog (a lab, needless to say!) and are struggling to find somewhere 'safe' to store vegetables out of the dog's reach!

We are currently putting everything in the fridge but this isn't practical longterm. Other dogowners, do you have a kitchen cupboard devoted to this? Do you keep it in a wicker or metal basket? Does it stay fresh?

TIA

I had to clear a cupboard out for my veg.

I use cardboard boxes to keep them in as it saves me trying to clean whicker baskets/plastic boxes if they get grubby Grin.

Potatoes stay in their paper bag and stay perfectly fresh as do onions which I just place in the bottom of the boxes. Things like cabbages and marrows will stay fine for a few days but once I cut into them I put them in the fridge. Carrotts and parsnips again will stay fresh as long as theyre clean and dry. If theyre damp it can make the box soggy and mouldy.

Peppers have to go in the fridge though, they just dont keep in a cupboard but that maybe because its too warm in there Hmm

Thanks, PL. Really useful advice. I think I'll have to forgo a kitchen cupboard for my veggies, too. Great storage tips, too! Smile

I chop them & put them in the freezer. Except potatoes.

I generally store a lot in the fridge as it keeps longer, but keep my potatoes in a sack in the porch and I also hve. Wicker basket in the porch, if you bag it if may help the dog situation? Lakeland do some bags and sacksSmile

I think it's going to have to be fridge and kitchen cupboard. Unfortunately, any bag or sack will be found and devoured really quickly!

We eat them so quickly I just bung them in the fridge. Anything that looks like it is going off gets thrown into soup.

Potatoes in a potato hopper (willow basket for potatoes). Onions and potatoes should ideally be stored in different place as they will last longer. Ideally, carrots should be stored upright in sand but this only really matters if you want to store them for a certain length of time. Also, bananas need to be stored away from other fruit/veg as they speed up the ripening process, so ideally not in a fruit bowl with other fruit.

Most vegetable can be stored in the fridge as it makes them dormant so they do not go off so quickly. However, I do not think that it does their flavour any favours ...
