Fairy liquid in place of washing detergent?

I have ran out of washing powder and was just wondering if fairy liquid would be a suitable substitute? Don't want to put it in and ruin my clothes!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! (Flies though air in slow motion to intercept OP on way to washing machine)

Actually I don't know what would happen in an automatic washing machine, but I do know what happens if you put it in a dishwasher (attractive and entertaining but catastrophically messy) and I'm assuming that a washing machine would be much the same.

No your kichen/utility room will be like a soap factory.

GobblersAnyKnobFucker · 02/11/2013 15:02

God no, you will drown in bubbles.

HorryIsUpduffed · 02/11/2013 15:03

What they said.

Just wash in water if it's a mega urgent load.

gamerchick · 02/11/2013 15:04

I've done it and it's fine. You have to use soda crystals as well though if you want them clean clean. Washing up liquid doesn't do the job properly.

LadyRivers · 02/11/2013 15:18

Ok a definite no no then haha!! So glad I checked, thank you all!

I used it in a dishwasher. Once. Two drops filled the machine but thankfully not the whole room.

HeGrewWhiskersOnHisChin · 02/11/2013 15:26

I've done it in an emergency and it was fine.

There were no bubble monsters in my kitchen or anything!

valiumredhead · 02/11/2013 18:51

Tiny amount in the drum, it's fine. Doubt you'll even notice the difference.

wigglybeezer · 02/11/2013 18:58

I have used soap grated really finely with a micro-plane grater more than once, usually when I have run out of wool/delicates liquids. Only about a tablespoonful mind, to avoid too much foam and it probably doesn't give you snowy whites.

noisytoys · 03/11/2013 16:52

Get an eco egg for times like these!!

Alexandrite · 03/11/2013 19:11

Go on, do it and take a photo! Wink

NewBlueShoesToo · 05/11/2013 13:54

I almost want to try this. Or may just link it to one of those threads where people ask what to do with small children when it's raining.Grin

Bearleigh · 05/11/2013 13:57

I once used a washing machine little gel bag thing in a dishwasher, by accident. It made all the pots smell very... flowery.

onepieceoflollipop · 05/11/2013 13:57

Not advisable although a few drops may be ok.

My cousin put fairy liquid in my auntie's new whirlpool bath. I wasn't there but the story is very entertaining!

homeaway · 06/11/2013 15:27

I use left over shampoo for the wool wash in the machine and its fine but don't use too much of it....

catinboots · 06/11/2013 15:29

Yes! A huge squirt. G'wan.

JammyTodger · 06/11/2013 16:05

I used to put a squirt in with the nappies occasionally to strip them. 'Twas fine. Just do an extra rinse.

Cassiega · 15/12/2024 14:09

I've just done it.. no mountain of suds and even my filthy floor mop pads came out clean..

iwantabreakfastpantry · 22/12/2024 20:22

Used it washing up liquid (fairy) loads of time of stains - grass stains, blood, chocolate - in addition to the laundry powder and it was totally fine and actually works well on stain. BUT I wouldn’t put a scoop full of washing up liquid in

DatingDinosaur · 26/12/2024 16:38

I'm guessing you're all in soft water areas then!

I've done it a couple of times (for the same run-out-of-detergent reasons) and the only thing I notice is that the laundry is more scratchy (yes, I use softener too). I give it an extra rinse cycle to be on the safe side.

I don't use a full measure though - maybe a tablespoon's worth.

The scratchiness goes again when it's washed with proper detergent but as an emergency, no issues.

Maybe wouldn't wash my best woollens or silks with it though but for a general wash on a cool (less than 40) setting, never had a foam party problem.

Frieda2024 · 27/12/2024 09:09

One,teaspoonful in a hard water area was fine for us.

Gabitule · 30/12/2024 14:25

i can this is an old post but I’ll respond anyway as I have lots of experiences with fairy liquid.

  1. in washing machine - yes, it works ok.
  2. In dishwasher - made lots and lots and lots of bubbles all over the kitchen floor. The only way to clean the dishwasher of bubbles was to put lots of vinegar in and run the dishwasher again.
  3. on hair- I use a bit instead of shampoo when my hair is overwhelmed by hair products residues (incl shampoo residues). Leaves my hair v clean, no itchiness .
