Iron tripping circuit, what can I do

Every time I turn my iron on it trips the circuit and everything goes off.
I have tried ironing in different rooms, and also turning off nearly everything in the house before doing so.
Iron is a 2200W steam iron,fairly new.
House is old and big and circuit board has been tested by 2 electricians who say although it is in heavy demand it does not have a fault.
Surely I should be able to iron occasionally?
Is there such a thing as a low energy iron and would this help?

There is an electrical problem with your iron. Sorry.

MerryMarigold · 02/11/2013 09:33

Yes, you need a new iron or get it replaces if it is less than a year old.

This is quite common with irons. Usually, either the flex has become damaged where it is frequently bent or coiled; or there is a water leak allowing drips onto the element connections. Sometimes this is associated with the iron having been dropped.

If you look at the thing that has tripped it will be the RCD and not the MCB.

An RCD is wider than the other breakers, and has a "T" or "Test" button on it. However if you want to verify, look at the thing that has tripped and tell me what letters and numbers are printed on it.

Thanks pigletjohn
It is definitely the RCD.
We have had this problem before but with a different iron, and when there were several appliances too.
The bottom line is,do I need a new iron (DH convinced we don't,I do)!

if you prefer, you can take the old iron apart and mend it.

PigletJohn · 02/11/2013 14:26

there is also a possibility that you already have quite a high Earth Leakage current, and the iron just takes it over the tipping point.

Does the RCD ever trip when you use kettle, oven, outdoor lights and sockets, boiler, immersion heater, washing machine? It is usually watery things.

pigletjohn the oven has occasionally tripped the circuit but not for ages.
Iron has been tested in John Lewis today and is apparently fine so plugged it in just now home for 20minutes with no problem.Yesterday even plugging it in tripped RCD instantly.
Borrowed a friend's iron and did some ironing with no problem this afternoon.

Get an electrician in to check things over. I wouldn't take any chances TBH

PigletJohn · 02/11/2013 19:51

might be a small water leak in the iron. try ironing without water.
