Tumble drier broken can't afford a new one, can't get washing dry, help?

Our tumble drier has always been pretty useless, it would take 3 hours to dry from straight out the washing machine so I would hang a load on an airer overnight and then tumble it.

The drier is now broken, it's old and one of the element things at the back is broken and the doors a bit funny so need a new one can't afford it until after Christmas.

There's 6 of us so a lot of washing typically 1-2 loads a day mostly 2. I reuse towels, the DCs don't have clean everything everyday but I still have loads.

I'm reading all about airers but I've had a load over an airer in the utility room for 2 days and it's still wet Hmm that was with useless drier on too.

Utility room is quite large, the sun streams in, in the morning, heatings on, I have a dehumidifier in there and open the window but still the washing never dries.

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do draping over radiators only dries a few bits a night.

Were in Scotland so one dry day a week if your lucky!

have you got an extractor fan in the bathroom? Does it work?

PigletJohn · 29/10/2013 22:01

btw

when you use a dehumidifier, you have to close the window and door, or it will try to dehumidify the world. It will fail.

sweetkitty · 29/10/2013 22:03

Yes I know about the dehumidifier/window thing, I've tried both and no difference really. The utility room is part of a new extension so supposed to be mega insulated.

I hang towels and bedding over the bannister, they take a day to dry.
I hang most stuff on hangers and hang them over door frames
I have to resort to radiators this time of year as well.

Damnautocorrect · 29/10/2013 22:07

Laundrette?

ancientbuchanan · 29/10/2013 22:08

Have a look and see if you can get a spin dryer on ebay cheaplyr, or put everything on to spin more if you can. They will get much more ready to dry.

We have one of those Sheila maid airers in the kitchen and an old fashioned airers as well.

Or decide to go to the launderette with the heavy wash?

RedPencils · 29/10/2013 22:09

We too have a new utility room as well, but stuff doesn't dry quickly enough in there either. I think it's the airflow which gets them dry.
One of my neighbours has washing out every day if it isn't raining or snowing. Im trying to follow her lead but You have to be at home to whip it back in if it starts raining I suppose.

Lakeland air dryer ... Heated rail?

PigletJohn · 29/10/2013 22:12

FumblesandFrolics · 29/10/2013 22:12

We have a heated airier from Lakeland. I can get 2 loads on it and they dry overnight.

Previously DH shirts were hung on hangers in doorways, towels, underwear and socks on rads everything else if it would fit on old useless airer.

FuckyNellItsHalloween · 29/10/2013 22:13

Airing cupboard?

namehopping · 29/10/2013 22:13

Lake land heated airer. I have two.

fiverabbits · 29/10/2013 22:15

I have a long kitchen and have two washing lines so I can hang the washing up overnight, then the t- shirts etc I hang on coat hangers and put on over door hangers the next morning. I find this dries the washing better than on an airer.

giraffeseatpineapples · 29/10/2013 22:18

sweetkitty that's strange as sounds like ideal drying conditions having a utility room with dehumdifier. Possibly the dehumdifier isn't big enough for the size of your utility room? The main thing seems to be to use a max speed spin cycle, get things out of the washing machine as quickly as pos and to really shake things out and pull out pocket linings etc and generally space out washing as much as possible.

I have read a few tips on here recently which I have adopted and they geninely seem to help a bit:

  1. spread things over 2 bars on the airer instead of just one to encourage air flow
  2. putting tops and shirts on clothes hangers and hanging them from door frames or open window frames upstairs. this frees up space on the airer and again things dry quite well as there is good airflow
  3. putting the airer upstairs on the landing as hot air rises

finally lots of people swear by the lakeland heated airer with a sheet on top to keep the heat in.

ancientbuchanan · 29/10/2013 22:30

Also, go in for WW2 austerity measures. Re sheets, top to the bottom and the bottom one off each week, will cut the sheets by half. Trousers once a week unless filthy.

I do sheets and jeans and jerseys on radiators, socks and underwear on the airer and shirts and pyjamas on the overhead airer. The radiator stuff takes two days, and I do it over several therefore, the rest one day and s night. I don't use the tumble dryer at all.

I have Lakeland heated after and I lay a sheet on top. Tis amazing and much cheaper than a tumble dryer. I will be reliant on it for a while as tumble dryer is disconnected due to renovation. I got money off mine via a voucher.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 29/10/2013 22:44

I would forego Xmas for a tumble dried. And I have a wonderful little washhouse where the boiler is to dry stuff, but still I need the tumble drier. After a washing machine it is my favourite appliance

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 29/10/2013 22:46

You could see if you can get a dryer (or heated airer) on Freegle? Although I would want to give it a good check over if so in case of any safety concerns.

joeymacc · 29/10/2013 22:46

Have you tried freecycle? You might get lucky and bag a free dryer on there. Good luck!

IfIDontKnowAndYouDontKnow · 29/10/2013 22:49

OP, where abouts are you?

sweetkitty · 29/10/2013 22:53

Extractor fan in bathroom is broken, never worked since we moved in and never needed it.

Hall is tiny no space to put airer, pre extension I used to have it in the bath. Not the bathroom the actual bath.

No family to ask for tumble drier vouchers for Christmas.

That's the thing you would expect things to dry in the utility room but they just don't. Maiden thing would cost money to install as DP is useless as would Lakeland airers.
