what dilution of baking soda? (or something else?)

I'm boring myself here, but what dilution of baking soda for soaking a high chair that smells of vomit due to multiple milk spillages?

It's a little one that clips on to the table, so I soak it in the bath once a week in washing detergent but it now REEKS of vomit and the detergent doen't seem to help.

So how much baking soda for half a bathful of water?

Or is there anything else I can try?

Oh crikey, take a few deep breaths... Or not! Wink

Can you soak it? I'd skip the bicarb (same thing as baking soda, by the way, aka sodium bicarbonate) and use a hefty dose of biological washing powder. If there are removable washable bits, whack them through the washing machine. For the solid surfaces, mix it up into a stiff paste with just a little bit of water, scrub the stuff in, then rinse off with hot water. Wear rubber gloves if you value your skin.

how big is the chair?
can you dismantle it and fit in the dishwasher (ikea antilope is brilliant for this alone).
if not I would use bio washing powder to soak and scrub and shower to rinse.

LowLevelWhinging · 31/10/2013 20:17

fascinating update:

a soak in the bath with a tub of baking soda has not touched the stench.

Maybe not enough of the baking powder?

Next step will be dishwasher.

I've already tried bio washing liquid, several times. I think this one might be heading for the bin Sad

It sounds as though your solution was too dilute. Is there a smaller container for soaking? How about scrubbing a paste?

mamij · 31/10/2013 21:15

I would use Dettol (brown liquid one) if you don't mind the high chair smelling of Dettol! Although it may not work and you're stuck with the vomit smell Confused

Can you pinpoint exactly where the smell is coming from? A plastic chair shouldnt smell of anything thats not visible on the surface so you can just wipe down with whatever you use for food prep surfaces.

Is it that there are straps that are not being cleaned properly due to how they attach to the frame? Or is it cushioned and there is a rend in the seal that has allowed vomit into the inner part of the cushion?

Both of these are easily remedied though if you can isolate them from the main chair .

If its just an ikea type solid plastic job though I have no idea why it still smells after being washed.

LowLevelWhinging · 01/11/2013 21:28

my mum looked after the kids today. when I got home she said, I've cleaned your high chair but it still smells! I KNOW!! Hmm

so I was just googling the chair to show you what it is (if that would help) and I realised I can take the metal bits off!

it's one of these: www.google.co.uk/search?q=phil+and+ted+lobster+images&espv=210&es_sm=119&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=aRx0UrbIMuG_0QXkuoGACw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1242&bih=624

So now I've got the fabric bit off and it's in the washer on a short 30 degree wash. It feels like there's a board in the bottom that might get fucked up and the instructions say hand wash only. But it's try this or bin it at this point!

Fingers crossed that a wash will solve the problem.

Oh and sorry for wittering on about cushions when I know that these chairs are usually just fabric hanging from a frame Blush

Vivacia · 02/11/2013 06:28

I didn't realise there was a fabric part to this! Is that the bit you put in the bath?

Rosa · 02/11/2013 06:58

Make a paste with bicarb and water and scrub with that then leave to dry and brush / hoover off.

LowLevelWhinging · 03/11/2013 10:20

I know you're all gagging to hear how we're getting on with the vommity high chair Grin

so the good news is that the chair survived a 60 degree wash and now smells fresh as a daisy!

HURRAH! And thanks for the help.
