Why are my washing baskets never empty?!

It's worse now that I cannot stick things out on the line, but just as I think I've put the last load in, a whole load more turns up!!

Has anyone any tips on keeping the pile down please?

I do

Darks
Lights
Whites
Bedding
Towels.

There's two adults and two children (5) and (6) plus bits of baby things ready for when dd2 arrives.

Me too sublime!

Yes, some people actually wash everything they look at (it seems).

I do separate, or else the whites end up manky and grey looking and I use different detergent for whites and colours, leave out conditioner for towels, which I always wash at 60, wash really filthy polos in a slightly smaller load with more detergent, at a higher temperature, if necessary, and so on. I can easily get a full load of any colour type within a week. I don't concern myself with having my basket empty, but merely being able to fit the lid on it.

Do you wash everything after one wear?

Jeans/ jumpers etc all last more than one day here. Everything we wear underneath is washed daily

Pjs worn a few days, with pants under. Just wash pants daily

Towels are for each person and washed weekly, not after each use

I know you're probably asking the OP, art but we wash stuff when it's dirty. The boys clothes and anything DS2 has touched with his sticky hands or face (so that's my clothes, then) are never fit to wear for more than a day.

My parents were round, last week and noticed how much the washer and dryer were going - I'd had a busy few weeks and the lid was most definitely not fitting on the basket. DS1 went to stay with them, for a few days, after their visit, and came back with a bag full of freshly laundered clothes!

we only wash dirty things too. that means towels once a week, clothes when visibly dirty or smelly - underwear daily - sheets fortnightly. we do cloth nappies too for 2 and do maybe 5 washes a week.

its not an industry its just a household task!

My mum told me washing baskets never stay empty long and that's just how it is-wise old bird, she isWink

I do a white wash, general wash and then my tops on 30. Rugby kit gets done on hot with the towels.

Bubbles1066 · 02/11/2013 21:55

I just do whites and colours on 30C. Bedding gets a wash every 2 weeks (sheets and pillow cases are changed once a week but I only wash once a fortnight). My towels are just washed with the colours most weeks but once a month or so I put them through a 60C wash on their own. By doing this I've got the washing down to 3 loads a week on average which is much more manageable.

Dh is convinced we take laundry in for the street

I separate colours so if there's not enough whites I try to wait for a full load so the basket looks quite full. I do the whites on a 60 because of the make up on the collar of the dds school shirts or it doesn't shift, so I'll do bedding if I have some if it's very light in the same wash to fill the machine.
But although I do separate I do still chuck a lot in together if there's enough for a full load just to get the basket down.

CircassianLeyla · 03/11/2013 11:18

I do:

Underwear and pjs
Bottoms
Tops (sometimes this two loads of grown ups and 3 DSs)
Whites which frankly get done every few weeks.

Towels and bedding get done in a panic when I need change them. Actually towels are fine I just hang them in the bathroom.

I am going to purchasing the Lakeland airer though or a tumble dryer because I am now back at work plus a heap of other things so I would actually just like to have a say where I wash dry and put away. I am terrible at putting away.
