Burn marks on slate hearth, what to do?

I've got a slate hearth in front of a gas flame fire and it's getting covered in what I assume to be little burns from hot debris spitting out of the fire. They are little brownish white marks and despite plenty of googling I am still none the wiser on how to remove them, if it's possible. I never got round to sealing the slate, will be kicking myself now if it's ruined! Any advice gratefully received.

Try isopropyl alcohol wipes (buy a few from ebay, cheap). This is what our chimney sweep recommended for brown burn/stain marks on our slate hearth (got open fire). They worked for us.

A steam cleaner will get the marks off.

Sorry only just checked back, thanks for advice, neither of which I've come across so far, will see how it goes Smile

Also, use baby oil to shine it up afterwards - just done mine!

Finally, WD40 does a good job on slate hearths, cleans well but doesn't always get every mark off. Fine as a stop-gap 'the inlaws are coming' type event.

Op - if you're still around, did any of these solutions work?
