Often my Hoover smells not sure why. I change the bag more often than recommend, any suggestions to solve this?
I do have a dog and 2 kittens plus kids etc

When I buy replacement bags I get the ones with a little deodorising stick to put in. It definitely makes a difference.

ShatnersEmptyCatacomb · 27/10/2013 20:03

It'll be the pets. Do you change the filter often enough?

thoughtsbecomethings · 27/10/2013 20:31

Yes do change the filter quite often, was thinking if buying some smelly things to put in bag.

yep, dog.

It helps to change the filter every time you change the bag. You can wash the old one in warm water and WUL and let it dry. Your machine probably has about three filters, two of them flattish fibre. You can put a squirt of perfume or lavender oil or something on the filter if you want, or on a tissue you screw up and put in the bag.

Sponge out the inside cavity of the vac where the bag goes, with WUL.

washing powder.
sprinkle a bit on the floor and hoover it up.

Geckos48 · 27/10/2013 20:34

Bit of shake n vac does wonders for the smell in the hoover

we are saving up to buy a 'new henry' which has a carbon filter in it to prevent smells.

Ours broke after 6/7 years of student/toddler abuse and we absolutely insist on getting another Henry, excellent value for money and they last and last.

Mines a Miele has a lot of filters. Will try suggestions. Thank you

if you get through filters very fast, you can buy the "fibrous sheet" ones by the sheet and cut to fit your vac with a pair of scissors. The Hepa filter in the rectangular frame is more expensive.

But I find if you wash the old ones, they are OK to use repeatedly, especially if there is one new filter per box of bags.

The new white or silver synthetic bags are better for dust, but we no longer have a dog so don't know about the smell.

You could live with a DH who does mental things like smash a pint of beer and Hoover it all up.... All broken glass and a pint of beer!! I honestly thought something had died in our house. I had defrosted and cleaned the fridge and freezer and scrubbed my kitchen from top to bottom before we worked this one out!!! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh.

Beccadugs · 27/10/2013 22:53

Watching with interest as mine reeks too.

Only since we have had new terrible cleaner.

Mynewmoniker · 27/10/2013 23:13

I had a smelly Henry and went n bought a new one 'cos I couldn't get rid of the smell whatever I did.

Then my new Henry started to smell Sad

Its the pets.

I now sprinkle a few drops of a strong deodoriser on a paper towel and stick it in the bag before I hoover. Every time.

Daddypigsgusset · 28/10/2013 14:00

I have a hetty and every 3/4 monthsshge begins to stink. I have a dog so he gets the blame. I change the bag, wash the filter in the machine and scrub the bucket, pipe, attachments etc. I wipe the motor down with zoflora and run it for a minute on its own to air it. Then I make sure everything is bone dry. Either in the sun or using a hairdryer then put her back together and she doesn't smell. Til 3 months later when I do it all again

LittleTulip · 28/10/2013 14:04

Empty a charcoal capsule into the bag

Don't people brush dogs any more? Mine only got a bath after rolling in something nasty, but a good brushing every week kept them (2) smell-free, according to visitors.
