Where do I get rid of the following...?

Many pairs of worn shoes but not in a condition good enough for resale (by charity shop).

Electric toothbrush charger and old elec tooth brush (doesn't hold power for very long as it's so old)

Damaged/stained clothes

Electric steam cleaner - I think the heating element has broken. It just pours out water rather than steam. I also have all the attachments for it which are in perfect condition

What do I do with all these things? Is there a place they can be recycled or do I just chuck them in the wheely bin?

clothes/shoes can go in the bin. Electricals should go to the tip/recycling centre

ilovepowerhoop · 19/10/2013 19:01

or if you are going to the tip anyway then the clothes/shoes could go there too

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 19/10/2013 19:03

Our local fire station has a container for old shoes/clothes. You could freecycle the broken steamer and tip for the rest.

specialsubject · 19/10/2013 19:06

to the dump, to be separated out. Assuming you have transport, of course. And don't make a special trip, wait until you are passing.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 19/10/2013 19:10

Clothes/shoes in general household waste at the tip?

Toothbrush/charger in the electrical recycling?

Thanks for the replies, btw Smile

I had hoped the clothes and shoes could be recycled.

I will probably make a special trip because they have been hanging around so long that if I don't do it now, another 6 months will pass and they'll still all be here!

There should be a textiles bank somewhere nearby for the clothes and possibly shoes, maybe at the tip.

You could try putting the toothbrush and steam cleaner on freecycle as someone may have one with broken charger/attachments so could be useful for spares.

ilovepowerhoop · 19/10/2013 19:16

there might be a textiles recycling place at the tip. Steam Cleaner/toothbrush/charger would go in small electricals bit

anotherhappybunny · 19/10/2013 19:19

Clothes/shoes can be recycled. Even if they are not good enough to be worn again they can be sold to be used for things like stuffing for car seats. Put them in a Traid or similar recycling bank. You could also take them to a charity shop who will know who to pass them on to. Don't take them to the dump!

Lurleene · 19/10/2013 19:19

Do you get charity bags through your door to leave out? You can pop the shoes and textiles in there and the charity will get money for selling them as rags. Just write rag on the bag so noone goes to the trouble of sorting through it.

Lurleene · 19/10/2013 19:20

Sorry x-post

Rattitude · 19/10/2013 19:20

There are often textile and shoes recycling places at supermarkets. I would put the stained clothes, and possibly the shoes too, in there.

The rest needs to be dumped at the tip, in the appropriate section there.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 19/10/2013 19:20

The clothes & shoes can be recycled, there are special bins for them at Ch

Charity Collection points (usually supermarkets/public carparks).

... and as GRT said, put everything else on Freecycle as others may need those bits.

Deux · 19/10/2013 19:33

Our dry cleaners has a shoe collection bin for charity.

Locally we have a couple of places who buy textiles for 50 p a kilo. You just drive up, bags weighed, money handed over.

Might be somethin similar near you?

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 19/10/2013 19:44

All the clothes/shoes bins that I've seen locally ask for good condition items but I'll pop down to the charity shop tomorrow and ask them if they can do anything with them.

I'll try freecycle for the electrical bits and hopefully they'll be of use to someone.

I hate throwing things out and as a result have ended up in a house that is bursting at the seams.

Most "tips" are now recycling centres anyway now aren't they? So as long as you put it in the correct container/area nothing should go to landfill unnecessarily.
