Cleaners

Never had a cleaner before but now I'm 33 wks pg and thinking about getting one temporarily, since everyone seems to think I will need one. House must look worse than I thought.

So those of you who have cleaners what's the best place to find one? Agency or looking for a local ad? What would you expect to pay? I'm in SE London if anyone has any recommendations. My only fear is that I will be unable to stop myself from cleaning up ready for the cleaner, out of embarrassment (two dogs shedding heavily at the moment)...

Personal recommendation is probably the best as you never know who is really advertising. i tried to contact some people from the notice boards and they often advertise for their friends who they think will clean well but they don't really know for sure. Your neibhors are also probably have cleaners. Sometimes you might notice someone cleaning the house and if you know the people who live ther, may be one day you could ask them if they are happy with their cleaner. Cleners in general don't like very clean houses because they don't really know what to do, they don't want the oposite, of course but if you need a cleaner, let her do the work otherwisw what's the point? i don't know how much they charge as i don't live in your area but the charges very between £5 and £10 per hour. You could have a compromise, just find someone for 2 hours to do dusting and hovering. Good luck!

Would you be better of getting someone to do a super spring clean for you, and then keep on top of it yourself?
If you are the type of person who cleans before the cleaner comes, it is a bit of a waste of money.
My neighbour has a once a year deep clean, she says it is fantastic.

Just started having someone for 5 hours per week (all in one go) and she charges £9ph (north london). Brilliant. She empties the cupboards and cleans inside the fridge.

I would suggest that she does a deep clean on your first couple of visits (maybe two lots of 6 hours) and then goes to maintenance of 3 hours per week. There's always something that needs doing and if she has extra time, she can clean the oven, change the bedding and do the ironing.

You're not the first person with pets. I have two cats and I daren't look under the furniture, but now it's all gone Grin

Hi I have recently moved to Horsham, West Sussex and also gone back to work. I have never had a cleaner before but just can't fit everything in, house a total mess. Can anybody recommend a cleaner in the Horsham area. Thanks

I'm in SW/SE border in london. i struggled to find anyone with a good enough cleaner to recommend so i used an agency called www.homeclean.co.uk (ream - i think they are uk-wide). this will be week 2 for the cleaner and so far so good. the last cleaners I've had I paid £10 p/h. via agency, you pay £7p/h to the cleaner and 1st year fees to agency of around £200. subsequent years are £100. So, for my 4 hours per week it will work out at less than £10 p/h overall.
good luck

Thanks so much, will check them out

ream · 09/02/2011 12:06

Unfortunately, they only cover the London area, my search continues, any Horsham Mums out there??

doireallywant3 · 09/02/2011 15:40

there was another agency i looked at.. a bit more expensive on fees but i think still works out abotu £10 p/h... www.selclene.co.uk/
am sure they cover all of the UK. a friend uses them and recommended them to me. i went with the other agency as they were a bit cheaper.
