We are in the middle of decorating the downstairs, everything is everywhere so i cant clean properly. The house stinks of fusty smelly dog and unclean. Dogs bed gets boil washed twice a week he has been bathed, i have plug ins automatic sprayers and the gel things dotted about the house. It still smells. We have a new carpet and sofa coming next week so this will get rid of some of the smell in the front room. But what would you recommend to get the house smelling luffly again? I will blitz the house once the works done which should be by next weekend. Ive been looking at the home fragrences in next as i like their perfume can you recommended any? Or anything else?

windows open. Everything else is about masking the smell. What you need is fresh air and lots of it. And cleaning of course. Dust and grime make a house stink to high heaven. Once you're able to blitz the place, it'll freshen right up.

I do open all the windows daily. Thats what im hoping that once the house gets blitzed it will smell better. Ive given up on the front room carpet as i no its getting replaced. Aaaarrrggghh i hate the house being upside down.

Windows open and back door open to let air circulate.

I've got two boxers and like you bathe the dogs regularly and wash their bedding weekly, I'm a bit paranoid of making sure my house doesn't smell of dog.

Also, I think once your decorating is finished the smell might go, wallpaper and paste have their own unique musty smell, although I do like the smell of fresh paint!

My mum uses half lemons, bicarb and little pots of white vinegar. Swears they all freshen up a room.

I dribble essential oils onto a cloth and pop them behind radiators.

Goinggreytoosoon · 05/10/2013 16:22

Ive just seen the dettol stuff advertised that you wash clothes with so i will try that for the dogs bedding.

I forgot the lemons!

Cut a lemon into four and put it in the sink, pour boiling water over lemon = lemony fresh kitchen

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over your carpets at night and hoover in the morning.

theboutiquemummy · 05/10/2013 17:15

Febreeze and the vanish shakey carpet cleaner

FlatCapAndAWhippet · 06/10/2013 09:22

Hoover daily too, my house doesn't smell at all doggy but I hoover every day.

Don't worry, once you get the new carpet and sofa in, it will improve. Carpets hold smells terribly.

Daisybell1 · 06/10/2013 11:26

GoingGrey you have my sympathies. We're embarking on domestic chaos and everything stinks of farmyard with a hint of dead cat (you get my drift).

I've found that using the wallpaper stripper has made it MUCH stinkier - I think the steam has got into the carpets and released the smells.

Hopefully as you get sorted downstairs, throw open the windows particularly once the new carpets/flooring are in, it will smell lovely and fresh again. Are you keeping the curtains? If so, will they stand a wash - the ones I've taken down were very wiffy....

Vivacia · 06/10/2013 14:44

It's most likely because you're not cleaning, especially that carpet. I try to open windows and the back door in the morning to give the house an airing. I really feel the cold, but find that if I do this whilst cleaning and hoovering, I stay warm enough.

I've never washed our dogs. Mainly because they are big, hairy GSDs, but also because I find bathed dogs very smelly (both when wet and later on).

Finally, I agree about not masking the smell with plug-ins and sprays. Keep the house aired and clean. (Although I treat myself to a reed diffuser every now and again).

rockybalBOOOOa · 06/10/2013 14:52

Get rid of the plug in' s and anything that does a little 'pouf' of fragrance (like in the ads). Fusty dog smell plus nasty air freshener does not make for a good combo. Have you tried bleaching your kitchen bin? Ours can make the house smell if we don't keep an eye on it. Leaky bin bags = yuck.

Goinggreytoosoon · 07/10/2013 10:02

daisy the curtains and cushion covers will all be washed ready to go back up. Yes that makes sense about the steamer as we used one to strip the walls.

The bin gets bleached twice a week and any food or dirty nappies get bagged and go straight in the wheelie bin.

The upstairs is fine but thats because its getting a good scrub.

Roll on the weekend!
