online grocery shopping

Hope I've picked the right place for this question...who do you think is the best supermarket for online groceries shopping? I've been using Tesco for ages but wouldn't mind a change. Think Ocado, Waitrose and Sainsburys are a bit pricey for a weekly shop, but am considering trying Asda. Would appreciate some advice. Smile

Ocado price match with Tesco now. I love them, they even have some free delivery slots in the week as well... They've never let me down!

Madamecastafiore · 04/10/2013 20:57

Have started shopping with Ocado after being a Waitrose devotee. They are no more expensive than Tesco according to my supermarket and in terms of customer service wipe the floor with Waitrose and don't feck you about charging you twice like Asda.

loobs2 · 04/10/2013 20:57

Ooh really? But what is the minimum spend? With tesco it's £40

Depends on the hiring standards at your local warehouse/large branch.

Used to use Tesco online but Sainsburys in real life - now shop online rarely, with anyone with a discount voucher. Though Sainsburys have changed their small print so you can't just create new accounts now.

I used asda online for the first time last week, it was fine but unlessI am being v dim I couldn't see a 'no substitutes' option. dd has severe food allergies so the brand and sometimes even size of an item is vital as ingredients vary.

Lookslikerain · 04/10/2013 21:35

I've used them all at different times (well, not Ocado as I'm in Scotland) and I've never had any issues with any of them. I didn't find Sainsburys any more expensive than Tesco.

Try using the mysupermarket website. You do your shop on their website, it's really easy to see what the cheapest products are, then they will send your basket to the relevant supermarket website to pay for your shopping. It also shows you how much your shopping would cost in the other supermarkets so you can change if it would be cheaper elsewhere.

Ocado

Never had any issues - and they take the money out a day or two after delivery

Had some issues with Sainsbury's as we live on the 2nd floor with no lift. Not an attack on the delivery drivers, but there was a lot of back and forth as to whether or not they'd deliver to our door or the entrance to the building. This all got to its peak when I was 38wks pg and DH in bed due to chronic illness relapse so... we moved to Ocado for peace of mind! My mum has used Sainsbury's and has had some odd experiences (no milk, and no subsitution for milk, being one; also being asked to come and take things out of the delivery van herself), she also shops with Ocado and has always had great experience.

Never had any problems with Ocado - one time they couldn't deliver (late night delivery) due to traffic, they were very apologetic and gave us a £20 voucher and delivered first thing the next day. Quality of food is very good and I'm paying at the same price points as at any other supermarket (going by kg price). I check mySupermarket for expensive branded stuff just to be sure, most of the time I'm surprised to find that Ocado has the best price/offer. Minimum order is £40 and lowest delivery price for that is 99p - over £75 that slot becomes free. The cheaper deliveries around here are usually the late night ones (9pm+) which works great for us, so we almost never pay a delivery fee.

I use Asda as well, mainly for cleaning goods and some other bits and bobs as I can't get them through Ocado or are significantly cheaper (Bio Tex, Colour Catchers, etc). Minimum order is £25 and I've found their customer service to be really good, they also bring direct to the door. I had some substitutions and they applied the same price from my order even though the subs were worth much more.

Bear in mind, come the New Year Ocado will be stocking Morrison's products... good news to me, hoping they have an extensive meat range like in store!

prettygreen · 05/10/2013 20:15

My favourite is Waitrose delivery. They are free over £50 I think and the produce has been great quality and the delivery people are great. I've tried the others - Sainsburys delivered some mouldy fruit and chicken on its use by date so I stopped using them; the Asda guy annoyed everyone else in my building by bumping the trolley thing up the stairs (I'm on teh 2nd floor and there's no lift) but he didn't expect me to bring it up myself so I'm not 100% critical; Ocado delivered up to an hour earlier than I'd booked and didn't record rejected substitutions (that may have been due to the particular delivery person).

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/10/2013 21:36

I think Asda have had some pretty bad press on here in the past.

I'd stick to ocado or waitrose just for peace of mind.

breatheslowly · 05/10/2013 21:43

We use Ocado. They do price match branded stuff, but I am not convinced that they are competitive on non-branded stuff. Things like fresh fruit/veg/meat. They also don't have the kind of offers that Tesco has. But Ocado has been good for us.

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2013 21:43

I stopped using Asda when they took my Christmas dinner shopping to a house with my address in a different town 30 miles away, and couldn't redeliver it.

TheHattifattenersBarometer · 06/10/2013 10:34

I have tried then all except for Asda and so far Ocardo have been the best. I very rarely get missing items or substitutions. They sell loads of other non food items so I've bought presents, make up, pots and pans shower curtains and a cheap duvet and pillow set for one of the DC's.

I pay monthly for delivery which means I can stalk the Christmas delivery slots.

loobs2 · 06/10/2013 18:46

Thanks to everyone who responded. I've just registered with Ocado and booked a delivery for this week Smile

ocado and at the minute they've got £25 off if you spend £100, so I loaded up the freezer with meat. They're the friendliest and the quality of the fresh produce is unrivalled.

I have been tarting around my supermarket at the minute getting my 'first' delivery from each supermarket to get the large discount Smile

Have tried them all. Ocado/Waitrose too expensive but good. Tesco and Sainsburys are the middle ground answer. Asda cheapest and would use them but sooo many missing items or silly substitutions.

It seems to depend on how good your local store/depot is, so I think you just have to try a few. I've seen lots of MNers report issues with Asda but my local one have always been fab. I've not had any billing issues or stupid substitutions (I do get subs most weeks but they're all sensible) and the drivers are all lovely.
