Pillows...DH...stains...blee

DH stains pillows. As far as I can see, he washes his hair daily, he's clean enough, he goes to sleep like normal people, doesn't seem to dribble, and yet his pillows end up with this browny, vile set of stains that really defy categorisation.

Pillow protectors go a little way towards keeping them cleaner but his foul ichor will soak through eventually.

My question is: how the offing jeff do I get my nice white pillowcases clean again? I have tried whiteners and 90 deg washes. Are they just...done?

What sort of bleach do you use? Is there special washing bleach or is it just the regular domestos or supermarket own brand equivalent?

And if it is just domestos, then does it matter if it is one of the coloured bottles or does it have to be the regular plain old original variety?

Try hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach, works and is much better for the environment.

rootypig · 06/10/2013 00:22

cartoad if you are going to use bleach the thin stuff is best, usually supermarket own brand in a massive bottle for about 30p.

I too have a bald sweaty headed dh (who knew there were so many?)

I like doors and windows open at night because of the morning smell. And I have to wash his pillow weekly to avoid long term staining.

Wingdingdong · 06/10/2013 16:39

I use the Vanish Oxy and soak the pillowcases for a couple of hours before washing. Both DH and DD have hot heads - and DD and DS manage to dribble, snot and God knows what else on their pillows too. It seems to have worked so far.

YY to windows open at night!

This video may help.

Hope this helps

so it is a man thing. DP washes his hair everyday but is the same. I wash mine every 2 or 3 but have white pillows. Always grossed out about about him exuding yellow vapours at night, relieved he us normal Grin .

Suddengeekgirl · 07/10/2013 07:10

Dh used to leave brown icky dribbles on the pillows. Not anymore though! :)

Turns out it was his gums bleeding! Shock
Several expensive sessions with the dental hygienist and its stopped! Grin

I'm about to buy fancy white sheets etc so will be making a note of how to bleach!

e1yy, thanks for the video, she was a bit over the top ;) But I have previously used a similar method for smelly pants when I was toilet training my DS, only I soaked the pants inb vinegar and bicarb and washed them after. I am already a big fan of vinegar and bicarb for cleaning, so I will try this method, but I think I will have to wash the pillows first, as I have a feeling they are the main culprit in spite of pillow protectors. I don't have a drier (feather pillows), so it will probabbly take a few weeks before I make it to the launderette, though ;)

Now the horrible thing is that we do sleep with the bedroom window open, and air out at night and in the morning! And it's still smelly.

Wonder what our DHs would say if they knew we were discussing their smells?

giraffeseatpineapples · 07/10/2013 13:50

Hi Misscph - waves. Mine would be relieved its not just him! Our room is always more pongey when DP is unwell and spends the day in bed.

Just read this thread with great interest!! My DPs pillowcases always end up with dark bobbly bits all over it, even though he washes his hair every day and only wears hair gel for occasions, I think it his either excess hair gel or natural hair oils. Once washed these bobbly bits disappear.

His pillows always end up yellow, even though his pillowcases don't. And now I think this is because he's a smoker, gross, gross, gross!!!!!!

hevak · 25/10/2013 12:56

Yep, my DP also leaves a lovely yellow tinge on the pillowcases - he has very greasy/oily skin so I assume that's the cause!

My arsenal includes Vanish oxyaction, ACE gentle bleach and I always wash the linen on 60 degrees with biological washing powder.

Pretty similar to other suggestions but it works a treat and the ACE bleach doesn't fade the coloured pattern part of our mostly white bed linen!

Does anyone else get lumpy pillows once they've been washed?
Even if I buy washable pillows they still go lumpy once they've been washed and out through the dryer.
