Smelly plugholes/drains

Why would our plugholes and drains smell? The one in the kitchen always has. I've just noticed the bathroom sink starting to smell - seems to be as the water hits it iykwim.
I unblock shower and bath plugholes regularly, obviously clean the abthrooms. Kitchen sink is connected to dishwasher so all pipes lead somewhere - nowhere for gunk to build up really. Bathroom is brand new so nothing should have built up.

Has the smell appeared after a sudden downpour of rain? We get this occasionally. Last night it was horrendous in our kitchen - really eggy/sulphury. It was pouring down here yesterday and seems to coincide with the smell a few hous later. Something to do with the main drains? I'm not sure what the science might be but the two often seem to go hand in hand.

Thanks, I can do, but does everyone else do this and I'm just not aware of it? Is this normal?

does anybody pour cooking fat or greasy water down the sink? stop

Washing soda crystals and a sink plunger used regularly are more effective and cheaper than occasional blockage removers and violent chemicals.

My mil has been putting fat down the loo for over 40 years in their house because the motion of the water apparently stops the fat blocking the pipes.

I have tried explaining this is wrong but it's more entertaining to wait for the drain to block.

We have a major problem with eggy nasty smells in our kitchen - always after rain. We know now why the sellers sold the property in the summer.

Ours is caused by the kitchen sink draining to a soakaway halfway foen the garden. NDN has told us that ten years or so ago the pipe got cracked so we need to dig it up and repair it. A fairly major job!

PigletJohn · 05/10/2013 13:32

only rainwater is allowed to go to a soakaway. sinks must go to a sewer.

fat and drains

What if you are not on mains drainage ?

PigletJohn · 05/10/2013 14:11

then it must go to your septic tank.

SPBisResisting · 05/10/2013 16:18

thanks everyone.
No we don't use cooking fat. I unblock the plugholes using a toothbrush DH's and /or plunger before reverting to the drain unblocker. I do think I'll have to do a routine bleach down them though.

It definitely helps to get into the habit of pouring a kettle full of boiling water down the sink every couple of days. I notice our sink gets a bit whiffy and I'm sure it's because less water is going down there as we use the dishwasher.

SPBisResisting · 05/10/2013 18:48

rightm I will do that as part of the general cleaning routine thanks
