I have a great many towels that still have loads of wear left in them but look awful due to being faded or having shoe polish on them (thanks to my ds). I was wondering if I dyed them would it be a success.

We dyed some towels about 5yrs ago as I couldn't find any in the right colour and they came up pretty good and are still going strong (colour wise) maybe try bleaching the shoe polish out first then re dying?

I dyed a few some years ago and they are still going strong; where there were faded patches though the colour wasn't quite uniform but nothing to bother me about

Where do you buy dye? Can you get it in Tesco etc and is there a good range of colours?

Gatekeeper · 02/10/2013 15:59

easiest to obtain is Dylon...you can get it in wilkinsons, John Lewis, Dunelm Mill. Not a bad range of colours www.dylon.co.uk/colours.html

see them better here www.dylon.co.uk/product.php?alias=fabric-dye-for-machine-use

You can also get Dylon from Amazon. I did all our bedding and it worked really well.

I dyed some white towels that had lost their whiteness and they came up really well using a Dylon machine dye.

When using dylon/fabric dye make sure you wash them 3 or 4 times before using on humans ....my children turned a lovely shade of blue after getting out the bath. Try explaining that to the school Blush

The amount of dye you will need is based on the weight of the fabric to be dyed. Towels are heavy, it may work out cheaper to just buy new towels, unless you like the ultra expensive kind. Not very Eco friendly but local dogs homes always need old towels so they wouldn't go to waste
