Hi, I wonder what you use in your washing machine. Any recommendations, please.

Generic brand powder as it's the cheapest. With bicarb of soda mixed into a paste and rubbed into particularly nasty stains.

Active washing ingredient (something or other sulphate, I think) is the same in all types and brands, and all the scents and formats are just marketing tools.

Surcare or Fairy
DH's eczema has flared up so might have to go back to 100% surcare again (annoying as they only do teeny boxes)

JackieNo · 26/06/2006 22:36

Ecover liquid, plus a bit of Oxiclean if needed.

lizziemun · 27/06/2006 23:00

dh has eczema fairy seems to be the only one that doesn't cause it to flare.

Powder as the largest box does the most washes and you can adjust if needed and cheaper than tablets or liquid.

GeorginaA · 30/06/2006 09:34

It's worth doing the maths - I found own brand liquid in one supermarket was about 1p/wash cheaper than the own brand powder (of course if you have storage place/can get hold of one of those HUGE boxes of powder, that changes).

Plus I use about half recommended dose on the packaging - so it lasts me twice as long

Hmm... it's particularly sad working out the cost of washes to a penny, isn't it?

The biggest tub of Kirkland (Costco) non-bio powder. After we use the tub, we give them to FIL, who uses them around his garden and on the grounds of a church where he is groundskeeper.

eidsvold · 30/06/2006 09:53

Dynamo- sensitive, Radiant, Omo sensitive. Liquid or powder depending what is on sale

UK - used persil bio or even tesco's own brand

mrsnoah · 30/06/2006 11:16

aerial bio, smells gorgeous and doesnt cause itchiness like fairy does

trinityrhino · 30/06/2006 11:17

fairy non bio powder, both tots have eczema and this is the only one I have found to be fine and never cause a problem

Raggydoll · 30/06/2006 11:39

fairy, ds has mild eczema. would love to find another brand that is good for kids with sensitive skin as fairy isn't very good on stains. we buy huge box from wholesale place costs about 15.00 but is HUGE

EmmaKB · 30/06/2006 12:04

Fairy liquid. Bottle of liquid lasts longer as you can put less in for clothes with no stains.

MrsBadger · 30/06/2006 13:39

Persil non-bio tablets but only because DH likes the smell - I'd use bulk-buy own brand stuff otherwise.
Half the recommended dose though so it doesn't work out too expensive. And Vanish stick for stains.

MadamePlatypus · 01/07/2006 16:18

Ecover. Have used fairy when the washing machine has broken down and we have had to use my mum's, and Ecover works just as well.

ediemcreedie · 01/07/2006 16:21

We use anything bio -the powder format. There are no allergies here.

noddyholder · 01/07/2006 16:22

do non bios get stains like ketchup and beans etc out?I've never found one that does

ediemcreedie · 01/07/2006 16:24

No, i use that pink liquid stain remover - is it vanish?

ediemcreedie · 01/07/2006 16:25

it looks like this

tassis · 01/07/2006 17:16

tesco non bio powder

I never understand why washing powder is so bad that we have to add vanish powder as well.. Why not just wash with Vanish alone and not bother with any powder?

Hmm, I think I'm gonna try it. Vanish is flippin expensive though.

fedda · 03/07/2006 18:52

themoon66 if you look on instractions on vanish tablets, they suggest to add it to your regular powder. I suspect, the same goes for the vanish powder. i also think it's too strong on it's own but anyway, let me know please if you've tried it.
