Just dropped my mobile down the loo...

I have no idea where the best place to post this is, but I have just dropped my phone down the loo. sob, sob. It is a Nokia Windows phone, I don't know the model. It will turn on but the touchscreen isn't working... Anyone know if there is anything I can do to get it working again? I know the chances are fairly slim.

I washed my sons iPhone it cost £25 for anew battery. Stick it in the airing cupboard

EeyoreIsh · 25/09/2013 19:07

put it in a bowl of uncooked rice.

Spottybra · 25/09/2013 19:07

I did this two weeks again with a brand new iPhone.

Turn it off if you can. Stick it in a sealed bag of rice. Add silica gel if you have any laying around. Mine took 72 ish hours to come alive again, I'd lost hope.

Do NOT switch it on and off - if there is water running round inside, it could create a short and fry the insides (speaks with the voice of experience here...)

Put it in a tub of dry rice (with a non airtight lid, you want no condensation) and put it in the airing cupboard, switched off, for about 3-5 days, to be sure it is completely dry. Or you can get special drying out bags from computer shops - I think they contain that water attracting stuff that you get in little sachets in new handbags.

It may come back to life, or you may need a new screen, don't know how much they are. Good luck!

DW's Nokia survived a cycle in the washing machine.

Before putting it in the rice, take it apart so all the bits have a chance to dry.

MadMonkeys · 25/09/2013 19:22

The wretched thing keeps turning itself on again, should I try to take it apart while it's still on?

Rice and a radiator. Blooming miracle!

MadMonkeys · 25/09/2013 19:25

Oh my goodness, I just tried to turn it off again and absent mindedly touched the screen, and it worked! The screen works again, my lovely lovely phone! I'll put it in a box of rice anyway to make sure it is properly dry. Thank you all for your replies, I love Mumsnet Grin

usual recommendation for wet electronics is to wash thoroughly in clean water to remove any detritus (or in the case of tea, coffee or soft drinks, deposits that will cause corrosion) and dry out. If you open the back and take out the battery it will dry quicker.

i haven't used the rice trick, but have had good reports. I use the airing cupboard.
