Groceries home delivery

I've just had groceries home delivered for the first time ever because I'm having back problems and can't manage the shopping even though the supermarket is only 20 minutes (hilly) walk. I don't drive and I'm a single parent of one adult with SEN, so there's 2 of us in the house.

I'm just wondering how people organise online shopping. Do you get it delivered weekly or less often? I've basically bought the things that last - cleaning stuff, tins, packets. There's enough of some things to last for about a month but of others to last for the rest of the year. We've filled 2 removal boxes with the 'overflow' and kept a list, as I can't fit it all in cupboards. I was reluctant to buy fresh delicate food like quiches in case I can't use them within date, so I've mainly bought longer lasting stuff. I'm hoping that means I'll have the heavier items in the house already and can just buy lighter stuff.

We just order food weekly as you would shop in a supermarket.

We got a delivery pass from Tesco (about £30 for 6 months, I think) and have shopping delivered as often as we need.

We have a big shop of store cupboard stuff about every 6-8 weeks and a weekly fruit & veg box.

We do a fortnightly delivery - we get all long lasting items that we're running low on (usually we buy things on offer so will have plenty tins for a month, eg) and fresh fruit, veg and meat, plus milk and bread. We buy lots of offer meat - half stays in the fridge, half goes in the freezer for the following week. We always have some frozen fruit and veg (as in bought frozen). We buy two 4-pint bottles of milk and it never goes off in that fortnight period - perhaps because one isn't opened it keeps better, or they're telling the truth when they saying filtering keeps it fresher for longer! We get loaves of bread on offer - one in the cupboard, one in the freezer for the second week (it's mainly used for toast so we don't get through lots).

If we happen to run out of milk, bread, fresh fruit or veg that we'd like then we pick some up in a small shop/supermarket. It's usually no more than a light carrier bag of stuff. With freezing we get a lot of use out of the fortnightly delivered stuff. We prefer to do fortnightly not because of delivery charges, as we always get the late night free slots, but rather to make use of the offers and stock up. Works out best and cheapest for us that way.

Blimey, delasi, you must have a mahoosive freezer.....

leylandii · 25/09/2013 16:24

about every 5 or 6 days.

We also have delivery pass, so every time we need more than £40 worth of stuff we order - probably about every 3- 4 days.... (we spend about £100 a week including pet food/supplies and laundry/toiletries/loo roo etc.. for the 4 of us +dog + 2 guinea pigs) we work odd hours so don't have a normal "week" we would shop for ....

That way the fresh stuff is fresh enough... and we never need to top up shop, so it keeps us to our budget more.

Madeof - I used to have the delivery pass when it frist came out last year, but found I was spending even more! I felt that just because i could get a delivery all the time, I would order all the time Grin

Have reigned myself in a bit now.

bigTillyMint · 25/09/2013 16:37

I have a delivery saver pass too so I can get as many deliveries over £40 as I want per week, like building. I tend to generally get one a week unless we have visitors and buy most things - generally just meat/fish from local shops.

delasi · 25/09/2013 21:30

building It's an average fridge/freezer, but the drawers are Tardis-like... especially when you're a dab hand a jamming stuff in nooks and crannies Grin

I've got a delivery pass too. I have several small deliveries a week so I never run out of stuff.

Before that I used to get it delivered once a week, but was always popping out for a pint of milk and spending £30.
