Condensing tumble dryer for garage?

noblegiraffe · 21/09/2013 12:35

Our tumble dryer has packed up after 3 years which doesn't seem long. The internet suggests that this is a common problem when you have your tumble dryer in the garage.

Has anyone got a good condensing tumble dryer that will cope with being in the cold?

I think mine is a condenser - the one where you have to empty the water drawer?
It seems to survive in the garage ok and v. cold in there
Its an Hotpoint aquarius and about four years old so ticking on a bit in dryer lifespan!

AmberLeaf · 21/09/2013 13:00

Having to run in and out to empty the water bottle could be a pain?

noblegiraffe · 21/09/2013 13:53

Why? It only needs emptying when a wash has finished, when I'm in and out anyway? We have to have a condenser, there's nowhere to vent.

Will look up the Hotpoint, thanks.

you could hire a core drill to make a neat round hole in the wall for a vent, if you felt like it.

I prefer vented driers as they are simpler and cheap. All condensor driers give out some steam, the cheaper ones are usually worst, and in an unheated garage is likely to cause condensation and make your tools go rusty.

I have a condenser drier in my utility room. It's bloody fab and I get no steam. The utility room has no outside wall so we had no option. But it's bloody brilliant - doesn't make the room claggy like my old one.
I am really happy.

EnlightenedOwl · 21/09/2013 14:46

they don't need the water emptying all the time so that wouldn't be a big problem.

noblegiraffe · 21/09/2013 14:54

Which one, Pagwatch? I need to know!

We've had one for about 8 years, I think it's Bosch, first in a garage and now in a utility room as we've moved. It has had to be fixed once about a year ago (fluff got in the wrong place so it constantly thought the container was full of water). Haven't noticed the steam, and you only have to empty the water out once every few loads.

noblegiraffe · 21/09/2013 14:59

Ooh pipkin, that might be what is wrong with ours! How much did it cost to fix?

John Lewis have a good one. Can't remember the name. It might be an Indesit, but it's £200. Getting one for our garage next week!

Pagwatch · 21/09/2013 15:05

It's a Bosch this one
Our utility room was part of a kitchen refurb and the kitchen company recommended that one.

ohforfoxsake · 21/09/2013 15:06

I have to empty the water, it ALWAYS needs a new washer or puddles form and you have to clean/rinse the condenser at least once every two uses. It creates a lot of fluff where there shouldn't be any and it has to be kept fluff free to work efficiently.

Oh and it scorches the bed sheets, god knows how many times I've had it repaired over the last 3 years.

It's a pain in the arse and I hate it. It's a Hoover.

Pagwatch · 21/09/2013 15:11

God, they are so different!
I empty the water every six - ten loads or so, depending what is drying. Towels produce gallons.
Not cleaned the condenser yet and had it a few months.

FriedSprout · 21/09/2013 15:37

I've had a John Lewis own brand for about 6 years. Very pleased and no problems yet

APipkinOfPepper · 21/09/2013 15:41

Sorry, I can't remember - no new parts needed just call out fee / charge for the time.

EnlightenedOwl · 21/09/2013 16:06

clean the condensor when it stops drying properly! Blush
Haven't noticed it produces shed loads of fluff?
water emptied probably every seventh load just depends on whats been in there
Seems to dry pretty efficiently.

CeliaFate · 21/09/2013 19:37

Mine's a Hotpoint Set and Forget. It's a bit shite after 4 years. I've had to have it repaired 3 times in that period. But I do use it several times every day, so it depends on how often you use it I guess.

CultureMix · 22/09/2013 09:01

I have a condensor dryer in the garage as well, it's a Siemens and coming up on 2 years. The garage is cold though it's integral to the house, works fine. No overall condensation problem though I do find when it's drying a heavy wet load (towels) there's still some dampness in the air so run a dehumidifyer alongside.

I empty water every few loads no problem. I am a stickler for emptying the lint (fluff) tray, there's a buildup on every cycle. There's also a 2nd filter type unit, down at the base, and I clear this out every 3 months or so - I can tell it's needed as the main filter tray gets clogged.

Not clearing out the lint is a fire risk so not something to ignore. From
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service: “We would always advise people to be in the house when their dryer is being used so, if there is a problem and there is a fire, you can be alerted to it as soon as possible. And never leave the machine running overnight when you are in bed asleep. Smoke alarms should be installed in your house and checked regularly to ensure they are working.”

I do have the dryer running a) when I'm out b) at night -- so the least I can do is clear the lint...

MrsBennetsEldest · 22/09/2013 09:07

I have an AEG one outside. Never had any problems with it. You should clean the lint out though, it's more efficient. Emptying the water takes seconds so hardly a pain to do.

Tinkerisdead · 22/09/2013 12:07

Im shocked at these horror stories, ive had mine for six years ive used it in a garage for years but now in a utility room, it doesnt create steam. I rinse the condenser maybe once a month and empty the water tank every time aling with the filter. Mines a zanussi.

PrimalLass · 23/09/2013 16:37

My condenser dryer is fabulous. It was cheap as chips Grin

wonkylegs · 23/09/2013 19:27

I have a zanussi in the utility room, it must be coming up for 10yrs old now. No steam problems. I empty the condenser collector every second full load, defluff the door filter every load, rinse the condenser unit to remove random fluff about 4 times a year.
It dries a full mixed load in about 60mins with towels add 10-20mins to that.
The only time I thought it wasn't working it very well it turned out to be the washing machine spin failing and not removing as much water.

BetsyBidwell · 23/09/2013 19:27

gah get a hole banged in the wall
