Kitchen waste

Does anyone keep their 'kitchen waste' on their counter top, like me?

What do you keep it in?

Oh lorks I have to admit to using a large plastic jug with another pot as a lid. I really want a proper caddy but my local council expect me to drive over the other side of town to pick it up it not going to happen.

Have been planning to go to a charity shop to try and find a large old saucepan with lid to use instead as figure will be more practical and less ugly...

Keep ours in an earthenware jar with a lid on counter. I think it was designed for biscuits or tea or pasta.

I am meant to put it in the caddy outside every evening, but don't always manage.

MousyMouse · 13/09/2013 13:25

one of those plastic containers that come with fresh fruit.
lined with newspaper (we receive plenty of 'free' ones) and chucked out each night.

Lancelottie · 13/09/2013 13:28

Lidded small metal bucket, meant to be for bird feed.

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 13/09/2013 13:29

I have a square box with a lid that I use for stuff that goes on our compost heap, and a kitchen caddy in the cupboard under the sink for stuff that goes in the council food waste collection. I use the compost-a-bag liners so neither container gets manky inside.

CointreauVersial · 13/09/2013 13:31

Mine is kept on the worktop, near the sink, in a lovely little square plastic caddy supplied by the council.

I use biodegradable liners, and every couple of days it is emptied into the larger one outside.

Rattitude · 13/09/2013 16:03

I don't keep any on the worktop: fruit and vegetable peels go on the compost heap when food preparation is over. Anything I do not compost (meat, citrus fruit, etc.) goes in the bin.

My compost heap is about 1m away from my kitchen back door though so it is easy to chuck out the stuff or lob it off it is raining.

CointreauVersial · 13/09/2013 16:55

We have a weekly food waste collection, and they take anything food-related, not just compostable stuff.

Pascha · 13/09/2013 17:02

Mine all goes in the waste disposal.

Pickle131 · 13/09/2013 23:12

I've got a large Le Creuset bean pot that's only suitable for compost because I cracked the base Blush

wonkylegs · 14/09/2013 01:22

Compostable stuff goes in a metal lidded compost caddy like this
As it's quite a trek to the compost by the vegetable patch, it gets emptied when full or every couple of days.
Everything that can't be recycled goes in a large bin by the door. Recycling goes in bins in understairs cupboard.

Tournesol....brilliant idea!

I have a 'thing' about buying stuff with names on ie compost/utensils etc on the flippin' side. Do they think we might forget/are stupid? Grr...

Buy ordinary pan or bucket. Label it with Sharpie.

(Because, yes, it would seem my kids forget daily which recycling thingy is which.)

gobbin · 15/09/2013 11:52

I use a small Ikea metal bucket that's supposed to be used as a plant pot. It's quite pretty cream with roses which replaced a bright lime green one that eventually went a bit grotty.

chirpchirp · 15/09/2013 17:11

The local authority sent us a small brown plastic box to use last time they changed all the bins. But it's ugly and brown and I don't have the work top space for it so I flung it in the garage and use a small silver flip up bin that I think was intended for a bathroom, lined with the biodegradable binbags. I put it next to the large flip top bin and it looks like it's had a little bin baby.

UnicornsNotRiddenByGrownUps · 21/09/2013 09:06

We've just reorganised our kitchen due to having so many recycling options now. Food caddy is a council issued one and sits on a shelf under the kitchen sink so its easy to have out during meals but can get out away again.

I have a thing from Lakeland that is either a tomato or an apple. Probably an apple as it looks like this but red.
