Mattress covers/toppers...

DS almost wet the bed last night and it reminded me again that I still haven't sorted out mattress toppers :) Do I need a waterproof one or are there any that aren't waterproof which would soak up stuff? Because I'm thinking that waterproof ones are just going to be awfulyl sweaty and horrible to sleep on...

Get some Hippychick covers.
Not cheep, but lovely to sleep on, but will cope with an accident.

You can often get them cheaper online than the official hippychick website.

Just had a Google - they look perfect, thank you!

My DS has the Terry towel waterproof one from ASDA, under a regular sheet and even though he sweats buckets it's fine, which is a relief as he's being a right fusspot about every other bit of his bedding not being 'soft' enough.

I've had a few different mattress protectors, and if you can afford Hippychick they are the best. I also have a Clevamama one from Amazon - it is not as nice, but still good and half the price. Far, far better than a plastic sheet.

The reviews for Hippychick are very good but there are still a significant number saying they aren't waterproof and their mattresses have been soaked...

I think my hippychick has only ever been vomited on (tmi, sorry) while my clevamama has had both vomit and cups of water tipped on it.

Nothing has got through to the mattresses yet.

Does it depend how often you wash them? I only wash mine when they get dirty, a couple of times a year. I know the hippychick ones can be used as a sheet, so would be washed a lot more often.

Is the Clevamama all plasticy and rustly?

Ds is nine and still occasionally wets, though we are getting to very very occasionally now. I have had a cot sized Hippychick one for him since he was two, seven years later and it is still going strong and can cope with a full nine year old's wee! It has never ever leaked through, (though somethimes off the sides, but that is my fault for not getting a bigger one). They are so soft and nothing like a waterproof sheet, it feels just like a cotton one, it has gone through periods of being washed and tumble dried every day for weeks on end and still survived. Cannot reccomend enough.

Clevamama is more plastic-like/rustly than hippychick, but still much better than the actual plastic waterproof sheets.
