To ask for a bit of help removing grass stains?

Not an AIBU I know but I need help! Ds has white football shorts which just look disgusting, despite being washed. They have grass and mud stains on them. I've tried Ariel pre-wash stuff, soaking in cold water, Vanish etc. Is there a magical way of getting them white again?

TIA :)

I was told to use methylated spirit pressed through from 'the other side' onto a clean white cloth would work and it did (although you obviously need to wash then afterwards so maybe that would have done it!) No idea if it would work after washing already though.

Soak in a little bleach?

magimedi · 28/08/2013 17:04

Don't know if it works post wash, but pre wash meths certainly works.

You could rub some detergent on the stains & lay them out flat in the sun for a day. Don't know why but flat on a table or something works best.

Try Swarfega, Halfords have it. It always worked for me,

Having spent all summer cleaning cricket whites for the best part of ten years the method which we have had the most success with is:

Wet the area
Squeeze some neat fairy liquid on it
Place soap powder on the area and scrub lightly with a nail brush
Then wash at 60 degrees

Clean whites all summer Grin

JulietBravoJuliet · 28/08/2013 20:24

Thanks all :) Have tried the Fairy Liquid suggestion, then scrubbed wash powder in and left in soaking in cold water while we were out. It's now in the wash on a 60 degree wash.

I daren't try bleach as they have a logo on one leg and I think it would wreck them!

Op in future don't bother with vanish type stuff, fairy washing up liquid, a nail brush and elbow grease are all you need for pretty much any stain

SuperiorCat · 28/08/2013 21:20

I'd try this in the Good Housekeeping section, there are some úber clean people in there who will have an amazing suggestion that will have it gleaming white in no time

JulietBravoJuliet · 29/08/2013 00:08

Well none of it worked! They still look like they haven't been washed since the day he got them :(

My Grandma swears by a thing called biotex. Its a powder in a box and she used it on all my Uncle's chef's whites...they looked brand new.

Have you tried just leaving them on the line in the sun, like, for days?? The sun does magical things

RebeccaMumsnet · 29/08/2013 11:14

Hi all,

As this is not an AIBU, we have moved to Good Housekeeping now.

monikar · 29/08/2013 14:29

Persil big box bio powder - the green one. Wash at 40C and I expect they will be gleaming. I bought some recently when it was on offer and it has got out loads of stains which have been there rather a long time. I haven't got grass stains but I would give it a try.

JulietBravoJuliet · 31/08/2013 00:36

Thanks :) I'll try Persil. Can't leave them out on the line as I don't have a garden, but might see if I can peg them in the window or something!
