A wooden worktop question...

... Or two.

We moved last month to a house with wooden worktops and a butler sink in the kitchen. Currently I'm hating both! Yesterday we oiled the worktop around the sink which does seem to have helped but I wondered firstly how often we need to re-oil?

Secondly my DH reckons we should cover it all in yacht varnish instead. Has anyone tried this? I'm worried about it changing the colour of the wood for a start.

Thanks Chipping. Not just me then. I don't mind doing it - but was worried about doing something wrong and making the problem worse not better...

The lovely Hmm agent said to get 'any old oil...olive oil will do...'

We do like the worktops - definitely cosier than granite imo, and obviously more solid than formica (or whatever).

Ok I've just oiled my worktop with the hard oil for the first time. I plan to do another coat just before bed then leave it for a month or so. Does that sound about right?

And do other people use a brush to apply or a cloth? How long do you usually leave between coats and how many coats?

Cakes - the agent sounds like a right bloody numpty. I think if I do rent this place out next year, I'll be doing it myself. The agents seem to create more problems than they solve!
