How do I clean the inside of the flaming rubber ducks? (and other bath toys)

DD's bath toys just seem to grow black mould inside within days of first going in the bath, which then floats out in patches when ducks are squeezed. Has anybody found an ingenious solution?

I think you have to bin them unless anyone has a solution (lurks a while longer) I put superglue in the holes now before they go in the bath to prevent the problem but it doesn't solve it.

Truffkin · 26/08/2013 21:00

It's gross isn't it? I tend to use hot, soapy water and squeeze it into the duck, shake it about then squeeze it out. Repeat a few times until no more gunk comes out.

Or buy really cheap ducks and chuck / replace regularly.

picnicbasketcase · 26/08/2013 21:01

I just bin them and buy some more but feel guilty because it's wasteful.

SparePants · 26/08/2013 21:01

I put all the bath toys through the washing machine every few weeks. Use our usual detergent and never get any mould.

Phineyj · 26/08/2013 21:03

Can you put a Milton tablet in the bucket of bath toys and fill with water? Hmm I might try that as I have also had mouldy plague ducks!

CockyFox · 26/08/2013 21:05

I soak them in Milton once a week making sure to squeeze them underwater so they fill up. And replace them when they get mouldy.

bonbonpixie · 26/08/2013 21:06

So this sort of work. Hot water, Milton and using those tee pee brushes normally used for flossing. I will be using superglue from now on though - genius!!

HerrenaHarridan · 26/08/2013 21:17

I love these threads, every now and again they pop up.

Run the ducks a bath and pop a Milton in, give them a squeeze and leave to soak. Rinse before use Smile

Others would claim bleach but that's not my way Wink

Bin them. Buy new ones and seal the holes with super glue before first use. Never have to worry about cleaning them again Grin

Layl77 · 26/08/2013 21:35

Buy nice ones then use a hot glue gun in the holes ;) out cheap bargain shop has glue gun kits£2.99 surprisingly useful!

dizzymac · 26/08/2013 21:39

I glue gunned mine last time. Wish I'd thought of it when DD (11) was small. Smile

IWipeArses · 28/08/2013 17:19

What a good idea to glue the holes up! No good for actual squirty toys though.
I bin them when they go black. Try to buy solid toys for the bath perhaps?
We have a set of plastic boats that we've had over 4 years that are completely solid, nothing with a hole last longer than a year.

Beehatch · 28/08/2013 17:22

You can buy ducks without the holes you know. None of this glue nonsense!

I gave up on bought bath toys ages ago, they play just as happily with a bunch of plastic bottles and lids, the odd nail brush and a sieve.

morethanmama · 29/08/2013 07:47

I'm going to try the washing machine. Genius.

TheHattifattenersBarometer · 29/08/2013 23:38

I've given up on bath toys, they usually take a normal toy in (plastic car or a bit of playmolie or some barbies) that way nothing stays in the bath long enough to get grotty.

rockybalboa · 29/08/2013 23:42

I bin them. Superglue in the holes is a great idea though!

starfishmummy · 30/08/2013 22:26

DS had washing up liquid bottles which I just changed regularly.
