How do you get rid of orange grout stains?

The white grout in our shower is developing orange stains, which google tells me is likely to be due to a bacteria.

I've tried using a supermarket bleach containing bathroom cleaner and vim which has improved it a little, but there are still some stains remaining.

Can anyone recommend anything that will make the grout white again please and how do I stop it going orange again?

Neat bleach has always worked for me. I scrub it into the grout with an old toothbrush.

I get this too and wondered what causes it.

I put it down to limescale (presumably bacteria feeding on such) in our bathroom. I clean occasionally with Limelite which seems to do for it. Need to leave it for a few mins then give the grout itself a good scrub with a finger in a sponge/small brush.

dettol mould and mildew remover - spray and leave on for a few hours and it will be white again

Bleach won't kill the bacteria without it being scrubbed first. Bleach will whiten the grout once the bacteria have been removed.

The best thing to do is scrub like mad with a toothbrush and a hot soapy solution. Then bleach. Bleach mixed with other chemicals (not premixed) could cancel out the action of the bleach.

Another option is to use a de scaler solution first and then bleach.

Or digout the grout and redo.

I promise you that you do not need to scrub to get the dettol mould and mildew remover to turn the grout white again

Dettol mould and mildew remover - is the dogs bollocks - just spray leave for a bit and rinse off with the shower.

Cloudkitten · 24/08/2013 22:34

I have found Dettol M&M remover to be lightweight compared to neat bleach, liberally applied, left for a good hour or so.
Jeyes fluid does the same job and kills off the bacteria too.

Orange on the grout is generally down to soap scum/conditioner/shampoo residue etc so you might need to clean up a bit more.

you only need to spray the dettol stuff though so it is easier to apply.

My shower has brown tiles. If I use anything strong it takes the colour off the tiles.

mix thick bleach and bicarb of soda to a thick paste. use an old toothbrush to work it along grout lines. Doesn't fail.

Excellent suggestions, many thanks
