Smelly microwave

Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of smells in a microwave. I've tried heating lemons in it, used the foaming cleaning pads from Lakeland, wipe it out all the time and always wash the turntable but it just stinks. I hold my breath every time I open the door, it's that bad! I can't put my finger on what exactly the smell is, just generally nasty. Or should I just give in and buy a new one?

Have you checked the ' ceiling' of the microwave. ( sorry that sounds so stupid), something may be stuck in one of the holes .

have you tried a cup of bicarb and a cup of water and heating it for a few mins?

Had the same problem but microwave is quite expensive so i put it in the shed with door open to air - seems to have done the trick.

Well, it depends on the microwave really... Is it a bit long in the tooth? Maybe the paint inside getting a bit flaky? In that case, it might be time for a new one. If its still in pretty good nick, take it out where you can properly get at it, and scrub the bugger with a thick paste of bicarb. Don't rinse off immediately, just work it well into the inside surfaces and then leave it open (outside!) for a few hours. Rinse off the bicarb, then use a spray cleaner with bleach. If that doesn't help, the smell must be coming from inside the vents, and I don't think there's much you can do about that.

We leave our microwave door slightly open between uses. Seems to keep it a bit less stinky... Except that my husband has a weakness for fish curry ready meals Confused

Thanks for all your replies....will try the bicarb, sounds promising. It is still in pretty good condition so don't really fancy getting rid.
