Labelling school clothes

The school teachers say not to waste money on the super cool name stickers but to use a permanent marker inside the clothing. How would this work on a white tshirt?

Anyone have any experience in what does/doesn't work?

Write it in the label not the tshirt itself

Biro on label, redo every few washes.

Only black PE polos have name tapes, sizes printed on the fabric, no white labels anywhere

Also if you only label the very few things like said polo shirts, gloves, expensive hockey/football socks that have no white labels, one set of tapes lasts forever.

I use iron-on but also have a laundry marker for back up - write on the care label rather than the clothing itself

I label T-shirts with permanent marker on the collar welt, where it is thicker. I've never had a problem with the ink going through.

I have been advised not to write on labels as apparently they are cut off when they fall into someone else's hands!!
So writing directly onto the material is the best way of getting the clothes back. DS has only just turned 4 so I am preparing myself for missing uniform a lot and I'd like the best chance of getting it back. Cost a bloody fortune!

I have never had labels cut off and managed to get things back when they have been mislaid at school. I wasnt defacing clothes with pen so nice neat ironed on labels worked fine here.

I know, right? I was hoping for the clothes to last for DS2!
This school is terrible for 'stolen' uniform.
It's not strict on logo uniform, you can wear anything as long as its the colour, so some have cheaper plain uniform and some have more expensive logo uniform. I think there is 'uniform envy' because before you know it, the logo uniforms have been 'misplaced' and all labels have gone missing!

I know I sound like a snob, but I don't want my sons stuff stolen!

I always use sew in woven labels from ebay about £3 so not expensive.

I sew all the way round all four sides and put two on each item, one near the label but never on it and one in a more unusual place like the seam inside leg or sleeve. Ok it takes a couple of hours but I have never lost an item that hasn't been returned (apart from a pair of brand new clarks shoes so now I write inside the shoes and use a hot knife to melt name into the sole as well)

Written on nearly always fades and smudges to an unreadable blob and you have to remember it is the children who need to be able to check they have their own clothes so it needs to be as clear as possible

I use www.name-labels.com/ these. They stick n (as the name suggests) - no ironing.

Same as Cockyfox - sew-on all the way x 2 per item (but only have one child so not a big job!)

Easier when it comes to passing on uniform that no longer fits to others too - just unpick the label
