Need carpet cleaning advice

I all.

I'm very busy with work over the summer (often working several 18-20 hour days in a row and not having a day off for weeks at a time), so I'm not very diligent with my housework during that period. I also have got into the habit of taking my clothes off at the end of the day and just leaving them strewn wherever, picking them up as and when I have the time and energy. Well, I've just encountered one of the dangers of doing this.

I started noticing a horrible smell in my flat and, when I finally located it, I found that I'd bought a bag of ready-prepared salad, then covered it with some clothes that I didn't move for weeks. In the heat and over time the salad had become a black liquid that had partially soaked through the bag it was in and the plastic bag that bag was in, and into the carpet. I've tried scrubbing the carpet with various cleaning products, but don't really know what to try.

I'm looking for advice for what products/cleaning agents/methods to try in order to neutralise the smell. The carpet looks fine, and isn't mouldy itself, it's just got a small patch which has a niff which can spread throughout the whole flat.

Please tell me that there's some cheap way that I can accomplish this, as I don't have much money and certainly can't afford to replace the carpet.

Thanks.

I'd try bicarbonate of soda first.

Thanks, I'll give that a go today, if I can find some. I'm sure I've tried to find Bicarb before to clean something and couldn't find anywhere that sells it.

you will find bicarbonate of soda in any supermarket in the baking aisle.

alternatively you can use white vinegar to neutralise the smell. use a 50:50 solution of white vinegar and water to soak the area, leave for a few minutes and then put a clean towel down and jump up and down to absorb the liquid. room will smell like a chippy while carpet is drying but once dry the vinegar smell disappears taking any nasty smells with it.

Thanks, all. The vinegar just seemed to make the carpet also smell of vinegar, but I think the bicarbonate of soda has reduced the smell a little. I'll do that a few more times and see where I am. First I just need to wait for the stuff I ordered online to get here, as the supermarket-bought soda was really expensive.

When I was a student we had a party and one of our guests puked all over the carpet! Bicarbonate of soda sorted it completely so fingers crossed for you.
