Bedwise, how do you manage over-night guests?

We have a sofa bed but it's rubbish- fine for a single person but 2 roll together. We have 2 single beds (the DSs), one of which has another spare mattress beneath it. I fantasise about having one of those beds where the the under-bed slots up beside the normal single to make one double but they're about £500! I suggested to DH that we 'make' a truckle bed from a single slat base (always available at our local dump) but we'd have to make it a bit shorter and hope we can pull the normal sized mattress that would sit on top of it through the legs of the existing single, pine bed, but he thinks it's too much hassle

Although we don't have guests that often (3 or 4 times a year), this is gradually increasing and I feel we just cobble solutions together rather than being able to do it properly.

What do you do?

Both of the ds's have beds with the truckle underneath - so if we have guests, they both sleep in one room using them as two singles, and the other room can be a double or two singles as needed. If more people are staying, the boys camp on our bedroom floor in ready beds, leaving four single beds free. The beds are not cheap, but cheaper than a fourth bedroom! John Lewis normally sell a cheaper pine one in their 'sale but not really a sale' times of year.

The children all have a spare bed in their room, either a pull out one or a sofa bed.

We also have a guest room which is permanently read, that has a double bed and a sofa bed in it.

We have a trundle bed brought from a shop on eBay, for no more than 100£, which was the main bed and the bed that folds under neath too, but with out mattresses, fine if you already have them Wink. Will be getting a sofa bed shortly also.

MrsHoarder · 09/08/2013 12:08

We have a sofa bed in the lounge, a camper van on the drive and will bring ds into our room which leaves plenty of floor space in his room if necessary.

We're lucky enough to have a spare bedroom with a permanent double bed so it's almost never an issue for adults for us. If we have extra people or children staying over we shuffle the boys round, usually putting them in together and the guest children in the vacated single room together. We also have a mixture of airbeds available in single and double sizes, so for one offs we can usually always accomodate people some how!

Pascha · 09/08/2013 12:39

Its just an airbed in the living room for us. Guess thats not the answer you were looking for though.

We have a decent sofa bed ( a corner sofa)- fits x2 adults and child fine.

We don't have space for more than x2 extra adults , plus a few small children ( who can squeeze together on soa bed, or a temp child's bed can be made up from sleeping bags and spare duvets

We use the sofa bed a lot ( mainly an adult or two), prob twice a month

We're lucky enough to have a spare double bedroom that's permanently set up. It is also known as the snoring room, and much sought after in summer as it's on the cool side of the house.

Mum2Fergus · 10/08/2013 08:51

We've 2 bedrooms...single in DS room which has space to put up a z bed which is stored in cupboard. Our bedroom has a super king, if more than 1 person stopping over we give up our bed and decant into sofa bed in living room. Worst case we have camping air beds too.x

googietheegg · 10/08/2013 08:53

We don't have overnight guests. Split a local hotel or rent somewhere on airbnb. Smile

xalyssx · 10/08/2013 08:57

I have got 2 single beds next to each other as I rarely have anyone except my partner over, but a couple of weeks ago my friend and my partner came over on the same night! My partner slept in one bed and my friend in the other, and I slept in the hole in the middle...

PoppyWearer · 10/08/2013 09:00

Both DCs have single beds with underbed trundle/truckle beds that lift up and (although it took a lot of online hunting) neither bed cost more than about £150. And IIRC that was including mattresses.

DCs are both young so the underbeds allow us to sleep in their rooms with them when they are unwell/teething. But when they're older it will make sleepovers for friends more comfortable.

One of the underbeds actually belongs with the single bed in the spare room, so we can make up a double/king bed in there for visiting adults.

We also have an old sofa bed shoved in a corner of the living room where we can put another two adults. So if my parents plus my DSis and her OH come to stay at Christmas, everyone squeezes in.

I do miss the underbed storage space though!

PoppyWearer · 10/08/2013 09:01

Also have an inflatable ready-bed so that DS can vacate his room if needed and sleep on our floor.

MirandaWest · 10/08/2013 09:04

I go and sleep downstairs on a futon mattress. Whoever comes to stay gets my room. Not sure what will happen when DNeice needs a bed rather than travel cot, or if there are any more DNephews or DNeices but maybe then ill have a bigger house. There is more space in DSs room but think it would involve mattress on floor type thing. Luckily I don't have too many overnight guests Grin

OrangeLily · 11/08/2013 02:16

We have a guest room with double bed, a double comfy air bed and floor space for anyone else!

Erebus · 11/08/2013 09:07

Thanks all. I have a bit of a problem in that I have my cousin, her DH and 2 x DDs who I think are 4 and 6 coming tomorrow night, only. Normally, that'd be a make do and mend but I'm not sure what configuration the girls will need. My house is relatively big but I'm not sure the DDs who normally live in a well appointed apartment in Europe will cope with being a floor away from their mum and dad- so DH and I will give up our room for them but that means I have to wash the bedding and clean/clear the room and ensuite up to 'guest' standard! Grin I will have 2 spare single beds tomorrow and my DSs are going away on a parent-free holiday for a week today. So I have a solution- except if 2 little girls need to sleep close to mum and dad!

We also have a spare room Blush but it's full of stuff, mainly my sewing machines, all set up; a large telescope etc etc. No room for a double bed or sofabed in there.

We have a truckle set. It wouldn't be easy to make your own as the underneath one is a few inches shorter so it fits. It also has special spring-up legs.

there is a faint chance you might find a used one on Fleabay. I suspect many people don't now what they are.

ShoeWhore · 12/08/2013 13:32

2 of our dcs share leaving us with a spare room which has a double bed. We also have a futon in the loft room and a crap sofabed downstairs. I have a big family - we had 11 in the house over the weekend inc us!

If you've got room, have a look at aerobeds - proper bed height inflatable mattresses - you plug them in and they self inflate. My parents slept on one this weekend and said it was really comfortable (and they would be honest if that weren't true Grin )
