Mouldy shower - help

ShoeWhore · 07/08/2013 13:23

Our shower is awful and needs replacing. In the meantime we have resealed round the tray with a combination of that strip stuff you can buy plus dh then sealed around that with sealant (is it silicone?) The problem is it's all gone black and mouldy. We've got visitors this weekend and I am really embarrassed for them to see the state of the shower cubicle!

I got some of that Mould and Mildew remover and left it on for a good half hour before rinsing off - have done this twice now - it has had no effect whatsoever. What can I do to get rid of it? Or are we going to have to peel all the sealant off and start again? (Can't scrub the sealant too hard or it starts coming off!)

Get yourself to a lakeland shop they sell a good mould remover. You can order online. You need to ventilate the area well when you do it as it is quite strong but it does the job.

I second that recommendation - HG stuff from Lakeland. It works miracles, it really does, even on mouldy sealant.

ShoeWhore · 07/08/2013 13:48

Thank you! I'll get onto their website and hope I don't get too distracted and end up spending £££

Oh, Lakeland says 6 days for delivery and not really near enough a shop to go in person. So good for a long term solution but not going to sort me out for the weekend. Any other bright ideas?

I think some bleach might help, with a try

e1y1 · 07/08/2013 22:28

This maybe a really bizzare recommendation.

But this thread talks about painting over the silicone.

However, the general consensus is that it won't last that long, may help for this weekend though.

I think I have seen the HG spray in Homebase. When I use the dettol stuff I leave it on for hours rather than minutes and it seems to work ok

goodasitgets · 07/08/2013 22:42

Thick bleach worked on mine. I squirted it on (then forgot about it) Blush
But no black stuff left!

NoComet · 07/08/2013 22:45

Bleach works and I think our homebase sells something similar to the Lakeland stuff.

Alwayscheerful · 07/08/2013 22:48

HG spray is the best mould remover you can buy.

I wonder if the adhesive on the back of the strip has gone mouldy, sometimes it goes completely black and sticky, in which case it will need replacing.

Try the HG spray or neat bleach on strips of cotton wool overnight.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 07/08/2013 22:49

Strips of cotton wool, pour on bleach, leave for a few hours or overnight.

TBH I think if that doesn't sort it then your only option is replace the sealant - HG stuff is good but won't work miracles either.

Alwayscheerful · 07/08/2013 22:49

Yes homebase stock HG mould remover and independent hardware stores.

Thank you all - I think I'll try the Dettol stuff again in the morning and leave it a few hours and see what happens. Otherwise it's off to B&Q for either the HG stuff or new sealant I guess!

I use the dettol stuff but don't bother washing it off until I next have a shower!

dontputaringonit · 07/08/2013 23:39

Black mould is awful. Cut the sealant out and re do it.
