Argh! Iron burn on fitted carpet in rented house!

Do I really have to "find a scrap of carpet and replace the burned bit", or even snip off the melted tips of the carpet nubs?!

neither. Please don't cut up the carpet.

unless the carpet was brand new your landlord won't get the whole value of it out of your deposit. Carpets in rentals are assumed to depreciate to nothing over 5-7 years. My advice - contact the landlord and ask what he/she would like to do. If you are going to be there for a while longer perhaps you could do some deal on a new carpet, depending on how old the damaged one is.

my tenants did this too. Got nothing back. These things happen and it sounds like you would be just as horrified if it was your own carpet.

Yes,I am pretty horrified... Sad

sounds like you are the kind of person who accidentally dropped the iron, rather than someone who irons on the carpet which is what I think happened in my house!

as noted, contact the landlord and do a deal. Don't spill the wine. :-)

BTW do you have anything in your tenants' insurance that might cover this kind of accidental damage?

Yes, no Extreme Ironing here (except in the presence of mountains... of ironing!)

Depends on how nice your landlord is. He/she might prefer to find a spare bit themselves (they may have some left over anyway). However if they are a bit tightfisted it might be best to effect an invisible DIY repair, taking some carpet from the inside of a fitted cupboard or something.

I'm handy enough with a needle and sewing machine, but this is more a matter of a Stanley knife and glue, so I think I'll have to come clean. I've already moved a rug to the "ironing danger zone", which should show good faith, but it's just infuriating. In years of renting, I never lost any deposit until our last house, when the agents/LLs wanted £££ for cleaning, and now this (which is a considerably more justifiable deduction!).

Gah.

Apologies for the rant, and thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply.
