hi we are moving house and as we decant bits of furniture the carpets are left with an indentation from them - does anyone have any ideas how to get these out, so it doesn't look too bad for our buyers when they move in? Or should i stop worrying and leave them??

Putting ice cubes on the dent and letting them melt can lift the pile of the carpet. I know it sounds strange!

specialsubject · 04/08/2013 10:38

you can try the ice cube - but if the carpets are more than a few years old and the furniture was heavy, the dents will be permanent. Kind thought, but you can only do so much.

I can still see dents here a year after moving in for the older carpets.

CoolaSchmoola · 04/08/2013 10:40

Icecubes always worked on the carpets in our Army married quarters.

HorryIsUpduffed · 04/08/2013 12:08

Ice cubes only work on cheap carpet, I think, not naice expensive wool ones. But definitely worth a try.

Are you outgoing and kind, or incoming?

The mini turbine head on our Dyson works quite well on carpet dents, I've found.

e1y1 · 07/08/2013 22:08

Steam mop is supposed to do it as well.

titchy · 07/08/2013 22:09

Damp tea towel and iron?

goodjambadjar · 07/08/2013 22:15

yes, I agree about the steam mop. We used it to get rid of the dents in our rented house when we moved. it needed a couple of goes over a couple of days but it definitely made a difference.

fengirl1 · 07/08/2013 22:26

I've used the ice cube method on several large dents in carpet, but also use a point (like on a toothpick) to stand the tufts up whilst it's wet, which has worked for me.

With the risk of sounding promotion-like, www.housecleanerslondon.co.uk - these are the guys who operate in all London. I am satisfied with their work for me. Once a month I have them come and do a top to bottom cleanup. Now, they have end of tenancy services too. I don't know the details but they can really help you prepare for moving out. They will definitely know what to do with your carpets. You may not be a fan of cleaning services, but I wanted to let you know about them anyway. :P

Wash the carpet using a brush. This is going to lift the carpet and remove the difference between the colours. Of course, if the furniture has been on the carpet for a long time, there might still be a slight difference.

Otherwise, as Scadi says, try calling house cleaners. They must have a solution to your problem. :) Good luck and keep us informed about the situation. :)
