Sorry, just wanted to get an opinion on whether I'm being silly with my requests, or is this actually the norm?
(And still new to MN and not quite brave enough to post in AIBU yet!)

Looking for a new cleaner, one has been recommended to me. Ring them to arrange a chat to discuss what I want.
I have a small, very neat two bed two bath appartment. I just want thorough hoovering and dusting of all rooms, bathroom, kitchen cleaned every fortnight. Not asking for any ironing, making beds etc etc.
I estimate about 2 hours or so and prepared to pay well (last cleaners were on £15/hr)

The owner of this company has just said "he will NOT be having a chat beforehand about what I want / look over the appartment etc, that I either want them or I don't and that the amount of hours I want isn't worth his time, let alone this phone call" and then hung up.
I'm a bit stumped really.

Am I being unrealistic about what a cleaner is prepared to work for?

Shock it's not you. It's him.

Areyoumadorisitme · 01/08/2013 15:49

You're not being unrealistic, he's being an arse. Maybe 2 hours isn't worth his company doing but no need to be so rude to you.

ThePearShapedToad · 01/08/2013 15:50

Thank you Picture. I was a bit Shock too!

Definitely him.

Get a few quotes, and go with someone you think you can get along with.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/08/2013 15:51

What a grumpy arse!

allmycats · 01/08/2013 15:52

His problem, not yours.

ThePearShapedToad · 01/08/2013 15:53

Phew thanks everyone. Off to bury head in oven now. (Cleaning it only....!)

My god, how not to run a business in one easy step.

My lovely cleaner used to come in every 3,4 or 5 weeks depending on how busy/skint we were. Never complained, just fitted us in when she could.

Now we have lots of small children, she comes in every week, so she's got herself another regular, reliable client.

She can do a whole 3 bed, 2 bathroom, 2 reception largish house with hairy dog in two hours as well, so you weren't exactly asking the impossible.

ouryve · 01/08/2013 15:53

What an arse! And that's him, not you. You would be employing him, so you would be telling him what you want him to tackle.

Only you won't be employing him and you're probably glad you got the attitude now, rather than after a few weeks.

missimperfect · 01/08/2013 15:55

Well that is you told isn't it!! Dont worry about it. I guess that particular business deals with larger more costly work and fair enough he is not interested - some cleaning businesses wouldn't want that size of job. But by the sounds of it he was very rude. I would let whoever recommended him know and then move on and find someone else. There are plenty of cleaners around who would be happy to take on 2 hours work at those rates I imagine - the only thing might be that a lot of cleaners generally prefer weekly rather than fortnightly work.

LynetteScavo · 01/08/2013 15:58

Well, he won't get your business when you are living in a 16 bedroom mansion, will he!

ThePearShapedToad · 01/08/2013 15:59

Yes, I understand if I'm not worth it to his business then that's fine, but it was just his manner! I want to go and squirt lemon cif all over his head.
Will keep looking.

(Thanks all by the way).

What a twat. Round here there are cleaners begging for regular jobs who would have bitten your hand off!

spongebobscardypants · 01/08/2013 16:14

As an owner of a cleaning company I would never speak to anyone like that. Creating a relationship with my clients is a key part of happy clients!

ThePearShapedToad · 01/08/2013 16:36
