Will a waterproof mattress cover prevent mould regrowth?

I have found some mould on my mattress where it sits on the slatted base. Luckily, I have one of these Ikea mattresses where the cover comes off the foam bit IFYWIM. The foam bit was clean, the only stains are on the covers. I have soaked it in Milton and scrubbed it and the stains have disappeared. It's now drying in the sun. I will take it to a laundrette tomorrow and wash it properly.

I know once mould is there it is very likely to come back but would a mattress cover help prevent it or would it make things worse?

Would think a waterproof mattress cover would make it worse.

You best bet would be to turn the mattress regularly, wash the removable cover occasionally, and leave it in the sunshine.

Don't forget to milton the wood it was sat on too!

That's what I thought. Oh yes, miltoning the wood is a good idea - thank you.

how often do you open the bedroom windows?

is it next to or above a bathroom?

do you drape wet washing around?

is there a water leak from the radiator, gutter, roof, underfloor pipes?

Thank you Polter and Piglet. We have the window open a lot, even in winter. The bedroom is next to the bathroom and I try to keep doors closed/the extractor fan on in the bathroom. The main problem is I think that the flat is right next to a river so there is always moisture in the air. I run a dehumidifier in the living room constantly and move it into the bedroom once a week. I will get some of those dehumidifier tubs though (didn't know they existed) and declutter under the bed. I have a couple of these underbed storage boxes and I might have to find somewhere else to store them. The bedroom is fairly small.

We have the same problem, mould growing on the slats underneath the mattress. We plan to totally clear under the bed of stuff so air can circulate.

We found that putting a regular mattress protector(not waterproof) on the underside of the mattress has helped, as you can take that off and wash it. We tried a waterproof mattress protector on the top, just to protect the mattress, and it made everything worse. It was noisy, rustled every time we moved and it made us sweat terribly!

Remove all under bed storage so air can circulate. We have our bedroom in the cellar and have a dehumidifier on in there during the day. We have had no mould.

No don't put a waterproof mattress cover on there- I distroyed a nearly new mattress by doing exactly this, it ended up a stinky, disgusting mess!

Don't store anything under your bed, clean under it often (if possible) and clean any visible mould on te frame of the bed when you are it.
