We live in a hard water area and despite trying every product going and daily shower spray I can't shift the limescale on our shower door. Any good tips?

I use a White Vinegar spray from Home Bargains (never seen it in any other shop), and wipe down with kitchen roll. Works really well.

Viakal Gel , put loads on and leave for 2-3 mins, wipe off and rinse. is amazing stuff.

You're prob gonna tell me you've tried it now Grin

vinegar never shifts our limescale
...we're 'ard ere'

muppetthecow · 30/07/2013 17:54

My gran, who also lives in a hard water area, swears by cheap diet coke to shift limescale. I've never tried it myself as we don't have an issue here, but the other tips she's given me over the years have all worked (toothpaste to clean silver anyone? It's amazing!)

mathanxiety · 30/07/2013 17:55

Cheap white vinegar mixed half and half with any good wash up liquid that cuts grease. Spray on and leave for an hour. Squeegee away and wipe residue.

headlesslambrini · 30/07/2013 17:58

toilet bleach which removes limescale - can't remember which one but it was one of the big brands. pour on at top of shower screen and leave it to drip down. You might need a couple of applications depending on how bad it is.

littlemissnormal · 30/07/2013 17:59

We have exactly the same problem. Cillit Bang bathroom mousse works but still doesn't clear all of it.
White vinegar, bicarb of soda, lemon juice....I've tried loads!

Apparently Center Parcs use wire wool to get rid of theirs.

Soak baby wipes, or any thin cloth (I used the white ones on a roll you can get in Tesco) in whatever descaler you're using and press them onto the doors. It stops the stuff running down the doors so it has longer to work.

I find ecover limescale remover works best. apply daily until you crack the worst of it.

ChunkyPickle · 30/07/2013 18:03

I use a dampcloth, gloves, and a squirt of toilet limescale remover (evil stuff) - careful around chromed fittings, and rinse well and quickly

AlmondFrangipani · 30/07/2013 18:24

Thanks for the tips! Tried Viakel and vinegar in the past and it didn't touch it. Will move on to limescale toilet cleaner and see if that helps!!

Be careful with the toilet cleaner on the metal parts of your bathroom eg plug holes, taps etc. It can ruin them.. check the back of the toilet cleaner bottle.

I have really horrible hard water and find limelite amazing on the limescale. I smear it on the shower door, leave it while I do a few other bathroom cleaning bits, like emptying the bin, clearing the bathmat of my hair which falls out in handfuls each morning, chuck the towels out for washing etc. Then rinse it off with the shower and use a window squeedgy to leave the shower door sparkling. If you have a build up on it, you may need to use something like a green scourer on it. Gently though so not to scratch it. But once you have it clear, it is really easy to maintain. I probably do ot once a week, and the shower is proably used 10-12 times a week.

It comes as a thick gel or in a thinner spray. If you have build up I would suggest the gel.

My dad used to run a bathroom showroom and he gave us some protector spray that really worked. You put it on once a week, buff it in and it forms a protective coat. When I get home I'll dig it out and find out what it's called. On the downside it's really expensive and toxic !

vix206 · 08/08/2013 17:20

This is an oldish thread but my tip is baby shampoo on a sponge. Works every time and you can just do it when you're having a shower. Smile

Chopsypie · 08/08/2013 18:11

Wd40 works on ours

BettyandDon · 08/08/2013 18:16

An amazed if baby oil gets rid of it!

Am going to try. Normal just use Sainsburys Limescale Remover. The clue is in the name and it's only £1.90 I think.

vix206 · 08/08/2013 19:09

Betty not baby oil!!! Baby shampoo. Or any shampoo really...

vix206 · 08/08/2013 19:10

And it does work. I got it as a tip off mumsnet last year and it works a treat Grin

Ragwort · 08/08/2013 19:13

I agree with the shampoo - actually I use a dandruff one Blush and that works well too Grin.

racingheart · 08/08/2013 19:15

Limelite - the spray action one that foams up. Leave it on for twenty mins then scrub off with an old net massage scrunchie thing (not sure what they're called). Rinse and wipe the doors clean with one of those shower wiper things like window cleaners use (sorry - been for a rather naice lunch and now can't remember underused nouns!)

Happiestinwellybobs · 08/08/2013 19:16

The only thing that works for me is the Aldi shower spray.

babyphat · 08/08/2013 19:17

Ecover limescale remover is the best - doesnt smell that nice but works really well. Am in London with v hard water

yerwan · 13/08/2013 14:21

Just resurrecting this thread to recommend Domestos limescale stuff, the one in the black bottle. I tried loads of things on my shower doors but only the Domestos applied neat with a scrubber worked. Melted the limescale before my eyes. It's main ingredient is hydrochloric acid and it is the shnizzle

greyvix · 13/08/2013 23:31

We went for a specially coated anti limescale door (Matki). It seemed a good idea at the time but didn't work and you can't use limescale remover on it or anything other than the recommended cleaner, which doesn't work either.
