Extreme carpet cleaning!

Nabootique · 29/07/2013 16:08

I (regrettably) let a friend between places stay on my sofa bed for a few weeks whilst between places. They have covered my living room carpet in mud, spilled drinks and cigarette ash. Carpet is a complete state. If I owned the place I'd be tempted to replace it, but it's rented. Is there any kind of carpet cleaning kit I can buy from the supermarket/DIY places that would do the trick, or should I look at buying a steam cleaner or even hiring a more heavy duty one? Help!

I've had a cat pee incident on a rug. Watching with interest.

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 29/07/2013 16:32

Make your friend clean it.

Lagoonablue · 29/07/2013 17:29

Ugh. Hireone from the dry cleaners and charge your friend!

Nabootique · 30/07/2013 09:35

Haha! Thanks for the replies. Does this mean Onesleep should be getting the cat to clean up? Grin

A lot of supermarkets do Rug Doctor hire......here

sparkle12mar08 · 30/07/2013 10:22

The trouble with Rug Doctor and all the hire ones is that they're rarely powerful enough to reach the bottom layer of the carpet, and hence they leave a soapy residue which attracts even more dirt in the future. You're far better off getting your friend to pay for a professional company to do a hot water extraction clean on that particular carpet. If you do use a hire one, make sure you go over it a second time with just water to try and get as much of the soapy wash out as possible.

I am getting my lounge carpet cleaned and is costing me £80 which don't think is bad tbh.

Onesleeptillwembley · 30/07/2013 12:54

It wasn't even one of my cats, Nabootique. Grin

onesleep In that case it should definitely be cleaning up after itself! Pfft. Rude house guests! Grin

sparkle thanks, that's really helpful. I think I might just hire someone. Just don't want to have to move all the furniture. Ugh. Was enough of a bugger getting it in there in the first place!

Aha good point s'parkle I've never used one & always wondered if they were any good.

I can recommend a good bloke with hefty machinery in the East Midlands if anyone is near me? Have used him for years as I have pets & like to deep clean every year.

He did my (filthy) lounge carpet, stairs & 3 sofa's for £100 recently.

inchoccyheaven · 31/07/2013 22:49

Have a look on your local facebook for sale sites, we have a few carpet cleaners on ours. I had our large front room carpet done recently for £30.

Carpet update He has now burnt fucking massive hole in it so thank you for the advice but will now have to have bloody thing replaced or lose my £1,000 deposit. Of course I have told him to get out this week.
