Toilet stinks like urine

I clean my loo, I promise! This afternoon I mopped all around the loo after cleaning it and there is still a 'public toilet' stink. Blush

I have tiled floors and walls so easy to clean. I'm thinking it's the drains, maybe? when someone has been for a no.2, you often have to pour a little bucket of water down the loo with the flush just to shift the no.2. so maybe a blockage or poor water pressure? I know NOTHING about plumbing btw.

Any suggestions?

I mean, do I need a plumber or just a hardcore clean?

Sounds like an s-bend blockage?

BoffinMum · 24/07/2013 07:59

I would pour in a chemical unblocker, let that work, also check cistern and see if there was enough water getting into tank for a proper flush each time, then invest in lavender Harpic bleach block thing. If that still didn't work I would call plumber.

Sweetsandchocolate · 24/07/2013 08:04

I've got those harpic bleach blocks and I regularly use harpic bleach to clean the bowl and under the rim. I suppose I could try cleaning the walls Shock

Put a really good limescale toilet cleaner under the rim and leave for ages. Then scrub really well flush and repeat.
I find this works

Is the flush whooshing with its usual gusto, or does it seem brief/weedy? Is the porcelain under the water level a bit dingier than usual? If so it could be the siphone in the cistern needs attention and is flushing less water hence the whiff etc

Sweetsandchocolate · 27/07/2013 01:23

thanks so what can I do about the siphone?

Have a look at the top of the siphon (plastic chamber thing in the cistern). If its a Dudley you're in luck, you can take the siphon out quite easily - the Dudley website has a PDF download to tell you how. With mine, it turned out that a little plastic bung halfway up the siphon chamber had fallen out, so the cistern was only half emptying. They sent me another one FOC and I replaced it myself - felt very proud! Other makes may be equally easy but I don't know about them.

Have a look round the back where the china spigot goes into the plastic socket in case it is dripping.

It is often poor aim by boys. Frequent wet mopping helps. Wet sponge round the seat hinge.

If there are cracks or joins in the flooring wee can creep under.

If the flush is poor verify that the water level in the cistern is adjusted to maximum depth. If the syphon is worn, the cistern has to come off to change it. Get a flapper valve. Plumbing skills required.

If your cistern has two little buttons on the top chuck it in the skip and buy one with a handle.
