New kitchen, fresh start

Hi all,
I'm looking for some tips. There are lots of threads on decluttering etc but so many that I'm a bit overwhelmed.

We've just had some building work done so loads of our stuff is in boxes. I'm about to start refilling the rooms and I am determined to keep it pristine. (Well, habitable...).

I am a terrible hoarder and so have loads of stuff that I know I should cull, but I find it so difficult.

The new room is a kitchen diner with a playroom area to one side.

I have loads of storage in the kitchen so thought that id try and make a plan if where things go. And try to edit my array of utensils etc to fit in the allocated space.

The play room is trickier. I have a ds aged 3, a dd of 18mo and am due in November. We lost our first son and this has in part led to a tendancy to spoil them rotten. I'm also loathed to bin things incase the younger ones need/ want/ would like it. How do I deal with this???

Anyway, I'm hoping that if I can sort out this, I may manage the rest of the house at some point.

Please give tips/ really useful websites?

Thanks
Thanks

Ooh I love Houzz for design ideas but hadn't thought about it for decluttering stuff.

I'm meant to be having a feet up day with a book, but can see that might be changed to looking at decluttering ideas!!

Some unordered thoughts:

  • instead of committing yourself to throwing surplus utensils etc away, put them in a box, store not in the kitchen and set a deadline. If you've not fetched them in by the deadline, recycle/donate them.
  • Children's toys. Give them only the best you can. Get rid of broken or age in-appropriate toys. Also, give them the enjoyment of a clean and tidy playroom with space to play.
  • I start as I mean to go on. It's lovely to have clean and sparkling rooms. Plus, it's so much easy and quicker to do a daily swoosh than an annual deep clean.

Off to check out that web page now...

Thanks, those are great tips. I hope that I am not one of those people who are beyond help with the tidying/ clutter. When we moved in I was so keen to keep it together/ organise as i unpacked but I just failed. Time ran out as we just wanted to be settled.

I really want to do it this time. The work we've done has transformed the house and its better than we could have dreamt of.

Basic plan of what goes where in kitchen now done. Next I think I need to contemplate some more hidden storage for the playroom to keep visual clutter down.

I'm a couple of weeks behind you. I have half a plan of where things will go, but will know for sure once the new kitchen's in. Current unknowns are whether I've planned enough room for cleaning materials, dog stuff and Unknowns.
