I live in a fair-sized garden flat with tiles that start from the front door and go aaallll the way through to the kitchen. There's loads. Metres and metres of them Sad

I've got a mop, a bucket, Stardrops and the beginnings of an urge to think about perhaps considering doing something about them at some point Hmm

Any tips? I sweep and Hoover them then mop mop mop, right? Any secret stuff I should know? If you help me I'll tell you how long I've lived here and therefore how long they've been neglected and you can all go "OMG that's vile" at me. They're greyish and flecked to start with so I have got away with it for A Long Time Biscuit

If they are that bad I would get down on my hands and knees and wash and dry/ polish/buff as I go.

burberryqueen · 21/07/2013 10:09

you must be my long lost sister!
make the water as hot as possible - Stardrops is good.
work backwards from the kitchen to the front door.
to rinse out the mop between moppings, twirl the stick between your flat palms.
then have a Brew

Narky Scrub like Cinderella-style? Buff? Polish?

burberry Why start with the kitchen? I do sweep and always start from the door for some reason

so you don't have to walk over your kitchen floor....

kalidanger · 21/07/2013 10:37

I thought if I started from the door I could go in kitchen to replenish bucket... Then do kitchen while hall dries so I can tip toe over that to hide in sitting room while kitchen dries...?

Everything is in the same level iyswim

how is it going kalidinger?
i am trying to deep clean my kitchen before moving out...it is gross!!

ImNotBloody14 · 21/07/2013 13:51

I love mopping Blush

I boil the kettle for the mop bucket as it dries off the floor far quicker.

Im guessing you are done now though Grin

scrappydappydoo · 21/07/2013 13:51

I'd invest in a steam cleaner - they are fab as you can clean really quickly and easily and don't have to wait ages for it to dry.
Actually I too am a massive slattern - in fact I see it as my responsibility to keep my house a mess and dirty so other people can feel better about their house ;)

kalidanger · 21/07/2013 14:19

Done?!?!?! Good god! I'm still thinking about it! These things are generally part of a pretty long range plan for me Grin

scrappy And I appreciate that very much, thank you ThanksWink

I moved here in Feb 2012 and just wiped up the odd spill since then Biscuit

Hoover or sweep, I've never done both. Use boiling water from the kettle, soak your mop to get it drenched with clean water and then wring it out as much as possible before mopping. Repeat - good gshush in the water and then wring out as much as possible.

From what you describe though, I'd do the first wash old style on my hands and knees and scrub.

EeyoreIsh · 21/07/2013 15:25

hoover then mop.

Don't worry about getting it spotless today, give a once over. And do the same tomorrow. And again next week etc. If it takes you hours today you'll leave it for months again (if you're like me!)

LeoTheLateBloomer · 21/07/2013 15:28

I second the steam mop suggestion. It's so quick - just hoover or sweep first and then the mopping takes hardly any time at all, plus it dries instantly.

poocatcherchampion · 22/07/2013 06:22

there is no way I'd do anything on my hands and knees! if it was really bad I just might have another go next week or soon.

although I love mopping and if I didn't have pgp I'd be round in a blink tondo it for you!!!

ElectricSoftParade · 22/07/2013 06:25

Steam mops are the way forward, very easy and efficient. By rights, my kitchen floor should be gleaming but it isn't as I am a slattern and rarely use it. Blush

Good luck and just think how pleased you will be when you've done in.

ElectricSoftParade · 22/07/2013 06:26

it not in

Stubbed · 22/07/2013 06:30

Try Method squirt and mop. No need for bucket, just straight on floor and mop it, much easier than bucket.
