Can I Wash Fitted Sheets in Washing Machine ?

I'm having trouble with my all household work. I'm alone in home, there's no one to help me out. I want to wash entire bedding of bedroom but I'm little bit confused about fitted sheet. I mean this is first time when I'm doing this. So I have no idea about washing. Can anyone help me out or recommend something. :(

I've always washed my fitted sheets in the washing maching, tumble dried them too, no problems. I usual do it at 60 degrees. Hope that helps.

ilovepowerhoop · 18/07/2013 12:50

it should have a label on it telling you the max temperature it can be washed at. I always wash fitted sheets (and other bedding) in the washing machine.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 18/07/2013 12:50

Don't worry, they'll be fine in the washing machine.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 18/07/2013 12:51

We all have to learn these chores one day or another. No need to be sad.

Take all the sheets off - fitted sheet, duvet cover off the quilt, pillow cases off. If they are all of a similar colour put them in the machine, add some powder to the drawer, close door and drawer, turn on and select the 60° program. press go and hey presto Grin

Daeira · 18/07/2013 12:53

Yep, just don't wash them too hot or the elastic will eventually give up.

kelda · 18/07/2013 12:54

I would wash at 30 degrees, unless it was really dirty, then I would wash at 40 degrees.

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 18/07/2013 12:54

And look up YouTube on how to fold a fitted sheet - they are really messy looking otherwise! (I only discovered this a year ago and I'm 43...)
Sorry I can't link cos I'm in work.

SavoyCabbage · 18/07/2013 12:55

Yes you can.

If its a single bed the whole lot will fit in all at once. With bedding, you can wash it at 60degrees.

If its a double bed it might not all fit in the machine. You only want it to be about three quarters full or it won't wash properly.

ilovepowerhoop · 18/07/2013 12:59

I normally wash at 40 degrees (and that is normally the temperature stated on the label) with the odd 60 degree wash if I feel they are really dirty e.g. with pee/puke, etc

cielschwards · 18/07/2013 13:00

Thanks to all. I'm doing it first time, but with the suggestion of you all I think... I can do it easily... Thanks :)

All bedding should be washed at 60 degrees as that's the temperature at which human grease dissolves Ditto with washing towels.

That's what I was taught anyway, but it makes me wonder if nightclothes should be washed that hot as you lay on them overnight too...

CuttedUpPear · 18/07/2013 13:03

And how to fold them once they are dry.

ImperialBlether · 18/07/2013 13:50

I will never get that time back, CuttedUpPear!

Ponders · 18/07/2013 14:05

I always used to wash bedding at 60 but I read recently that bio detergent only works properly at 40 or lower? Which is a bit confusing Confused

So now I try to alternate between bio/40 & non-bio/60

I may be overthinking this though Grin

kelda · 18/07/2013 14:08

Bio detergent works at approx body temperature - it uses enzymnes which are designed to work at body temerpature ie. about 37degrees.

I only ever use the 60 deg wash with wee, poo etc.

On 30/40 deg wash, the sheets turn out perfectly clean. I use non-bio because of eczema.

peanutMD · 18/07/2013 14:10

Never mind folding the sheets neatly.

Thanks to the wonders of MN I fold my sheets as flatish as I can and bung inside the coordinating pillowcase along with the duvet cover and other pillowcase if its a double and voila bedding stored neatly and no faffing looking for matching bits :o

TheRealFellatio · 18/07/2013 14:11

Of course you can! sheets are no different to towels or any other top-layer bedding or clothing. Even pillows and duvets can usually be put in the washing machine but you do need to look at the instruction labels. there is very little that cannot cope with a standard 40 degree cottons setting wash in a machine.

ImperialBlether · 18/07/2013 15:47

I just don't understand the question though. OP, have you never washed sheets before?

poocatcherchampion · 18/07/2013 16:34

that's how I fold them! how smug am I?!?!

buildingmycorestrength · 18/07/2013 20:01

OP, it is daunting learning household chores for the first time. Come back for more advice from wise Mumsnetters if there are other things you are unsure of.

specialsubject · 18/07/2013 22:44

absolutely -no-one is born knowing this stuff and if parents didn't teach for whatever reason, the OP won't know.

let's help!

Glittertwins · 19/07/2013 14:25

I can vouch for the not washing properly if the machine is stuffed full!

YoungBritishPissArtist · 20/07/2013 18:01

I wash bedding at 90 - I've got fitted sheets - is that bad for the elastic? I've haven't noticed any deterioration.

superbagpuss · 20/07/2013 18:20

if its any consolation I taught a 40 something make colleague how to stick a double duvet on - using the inside out method

he had been doing it wrong his whole life Hmm

something's do need to be asked

also only wash bottom sheet and double duvet if you have the means to dry them, probably outside today. they will smell great and no ironing Grin.
