Best way to wash windows?

whethergirl · 11/07/2013 13:53

My windows really need a clean!

What's the best and easiest way to clean them? I'm not ultra fussy, I just want them clean and don't want to spend too long doing them.

I find the quickest way is with glass cleaner and a lint free cloth, microfibre ones are best, if not then kitchen towel if you have more time then a bucket with a little squeeze of washing up liquid and some vinegar, two cloths one for wet and one for drying hth .

Micro fibre clothes! E-cloth do a window-cleaning kit, with a cloth for washing that you use wet and a cloth for drying that you use dry (obviously). Gets the windows really clean and no smears. I don't do it very often i hasten to add, but i'm hot on the theory Grin.

Not clothes, cloths. Idiot.

loveliesbleeding1 · 11/07/2013 14:17

Oh and dont bother with e cloths they are good but expensive, you can get microfibre ones anywhere now.

loveliesbleeding1 · 11/07/2013 14:17

Oops x post lol

Janek · 11/07/2013 14:19

Great minds think alike. Apart from when talking about e-cloths...

suburbophobe · 11/07/2013 14:21

Glass cleaner and old newspapers is what I use. Works a treat.

loveliesbleeding1 · 11/07/2013 14:22

No I totally agree they are great but when in a hurry I grab the first cloth that comes to hand!! X

whethergirl · 11/07/2013 14:36

As I haven't cleaned them in a while Blush I'm thinking that I might need to use water, not just a window cleaner - especially for the outside.

Outside, use a warm soapy cloth (drop of fairy in the water) and a sweegie. Buff streaks and drips with dry microfiber.

Inside, I struggled with microfiber and blue spray because of lint and streaks. So, I just bought a Karcher window vac. I can use the warm soapy water and buff the little bits that need it and it's very fast. Fun, too!

whethergirl · 11/07/2013 21:48

Thanks for all your advice, think I will go for squirt of washing up liquid & vinegar for outside, and window cleaner inside.

Wow, that Karcher window vac is pricey, I don't care about my windows that much!

Although according to my mum, your windows are what people use to judge how clean you are inside the house Hmm

KatyTheCleaningLady · 11/07/2013 22:14

Yeah, the Karcher isn't worth the money unless you're a cleaner. Grin

bigbuttons · 11/07/2013 22:17

I have discovered rubbing alcohol. I mix it with equal parts of water in a sprayer. Absolutely no streaks and my windows have never looked so clean! Cheap too!

scrazy · 11/07/2013 22:19

I'm going to do mine this weekend, I cannot see through them, my house inside is cleanish.

I will wash with soapy water then dry off with special glass cloths I've just spent £2 on.

It was the front step which indicated how clean your house was, int olden days.

whethergirl · 11/07/2013 22:26

My front step is even worse!!

Get an ettore kit (off eBay-£20 odd for a mop & squeegee). This is what the pro's use & it's super quick. Little warm water, washing up liquid & vinegar-frothy all over window & squeegee off.

Life changing stuff!

scrazy · 12/07/2013 10:49

Isn't the vinegar, newspaper method just and old wives tale as these were the only resource they had available and cheap? Grin

TheThickPlottens · 12/07/2013 10:57

scrazy it's not a myth. Works well but I've abandoned that way as my arms were falling off me from the rubbing. Wet paper to wash the windows and dry paper to dry the windows. My dad taught me to do it that way.

Now it's window cleaner and a cloth. Much easier and faster until I learn an easier way. I like the thoughts of the squeegee.

whethergirl · 12/07/2013 13:13

I like the sound of the ettore kit evelynj, thanks for that.

I always use vinegar to clean my mirrors, it does work. But it is a bit stinky!

used to use newspaper and window cleaner spray , always worked but my God it it was hard work. Just last week I used 2 cheap microfibre cloths (from Aldi) dampened one a little and washed the window and used the dry one to buff, very easy and Im 38 weeks pregnant!
