in the kitchen there are an army of ants. It is revolting. we have ant boxes (useless) have put Jeyes fluid around the outside walls, ant powder in the doorways. But still the bastards get in. they march on my worktop. eww.

Are ant boxes, the little boxes with poison inside that they take to their nest?

That is the only solution I have found to ants. It does take a few days to work though.

I currently also live in a house overrun with ants. We moved here recently. I have killed the nest in the garden and got rid of the ones in the bathroom. I need to put some poison in the hall though. They are everywhere!

NoComet · 11/07/2013 01:13

We have swept so much ant powder into the gap where our skirting boards just don't meet the tiles they seem to have got the message.

snowmummy · 11/07/2013 01:15

You need to work out where they are coming in and block them.

MrsShrek3 · 11/07/2013 07:50

snow, that I fear is the biggie. I can't figure out where they are getting in Confused

They normally trot along in a line to and from the nest. Follow them. Ignore the ones that are a bit eratic - they're confused :)

atm we have so many antassasination devices that we only find the wayward sort. I would quite like to find the marching army in order to biff the buggers.

Totally agree with find the ones marching in a straight line and then a kettleful of boiling water over the top. Apparently it destroys the scent markers to your house and puts them off. It worked for me.

gamerchick · 11/07/2013 22:55

Bait stations in the most gathered areas and replace every 2 weeks.. Mega hoovering and cleaning so there's no crumbs. No food left out anywhere and careful watching of the established line will tell you where they're getting in.

gamerchick · 11/07/2013 22:58

And no using of the hose outside to drown the nest..because the little swines run up your body and munch the fuck out of you.

ZenGardener · 12/07/2013 02:08

I don't know antassination but the Nippon gel is supposed to be really good. It's hard if you are just getting a few wanderers though.

MrsShrek3 · 12/07/2013 18:18

megasize nippon then and gel the entire outside effing wall Grin

This is where having a Dyson is great fun Hmm

Jeyes fluid outside stinks but I've used it (and boiling water) on nests before.

Raid used to do a foam killer with a nozzle so you could point it into cracks, then it would expand and die down to a repellant layer. This would appear to be close: www.pestcontrolsupplies.co.uk/protector-ant-nest-destroyer-foam-spray-530ml

Also, you have to remove anything that might attract them, so mega clean surfaces and floors. Dettol and Zoflora will be your friend.

leobeebs · 13/07/2013 22:50

I woke to an army all over my kitchen work tops. Got a couple of Nippon bait things but the bastards are coming in through the extractor fan. Have worked out where the nest is outside and have put more bait out there.

Feel so dirty. Looks like a super clean is in order once they've gone. Do you reckon if I boil some water and put it where u think they are that would help kill them?

NomDeClavier · 13/07/2013 23:00

Wipe down work surfaces with peppermint essential oil mixes with boiling water. They hate the stuff.

PigletJohn · 14/07/2013 11:50

Nippon liquid in a small toothpaste-like tube. Far better than powders. Disinfectants are not insecticides.

Seabright · 15/07/2013 08:10

You've got to get the whole family on board with the no-crumbs regime, which can be as bigger problem as the ants themselves!

I use boiling water on the nest too, when I find them. I do it whenever I see them coming through the cracks in the patio, that way I hope they never get as far as the house. Seems to be working so far.

Another vote for boiling water here. I have tried everything and boiling water has been the most successful.
