Argh - buggered the butcher's block already!

Only got it last week and decided to chop some focaccia bread on it which has left oil marks all over.

So pissed off with myself as I now can't get them out - sanded it heavily and they've still reappeared.

It's old (big thick uneven block) and had obviously been sanded beautifully but not oiled/waxed.

How can I savage this and stop DH giving me evils?

Shameless bump - can anyone help?

I think DH needs to stop with the evils! It's meant to be used

I'd try a little bit of disolved bio detergent to see if that neutralises the oil

However oil is notoriously difficult to get out of porous surfaces.

There's also loads of stuff on the Internet if you google you can try....using window cleaner or cornstarch etc

Thistledew · 11/07/2013 07:58

What's wrong with getting oil on it? Why not give it a good oiling all over? Use vegetable oil so it doesn't matter if it comes into contact with food.

The point of a butchers block is it gets all the abuse - not the other kitchen surfaces, it wears and cuts, and gets dents and grease marks and scorch marks and looks like something that actually gets used....

The wood of a butcher's block has antibacterial properties- which are released by cutting things on it... the clue is there in the name surely..

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/07/2013 08:11

It's meant for chopping isn't it?

FariesDoExist · 11/07/2013 12:23

I don't think it matters to get oil over it? It'll soon be covered in scratches and marks anyway surely, it's a functional item not a decorative accessory

LittleMilla · 11/07/2013 17:29

Personally I think that knocks, scrapes etc all add to the character. DH has just got his knickers in a twist and keeps on saying it should be waxed etc.

My dad used to be a butcher and says they would use sawdust and a wire brush to clean theirs Grin.

Might try the bicarb to appease DH.

It's the kind of thing my DP would get worked up about too, he likes everything to be 'just so' (drives me nuts!)

Bonsoir · 11/07/2013 17:41

It's supposed to get scarred!

Both oil(olive/nut/kernel) and wood have antibacterial qualities. A good scrub every so often with Bacardi and a wire brush if your concerned would also help
